I was having a conversation with a well known SEO Guru, and I want to know what you guys think... honestly only if you're experienced.
Do you think blog commenting NOT blog spamming on High PR pages with ******** provides link juice or affect your ranking in a possitive manner?

I'm interested. Thank you.

I don't think commenting hurts. Most of my backlinks that webmaster tools finds are posts on forums or blog comments that I made over time that weren't spam.

Blog commenting (valuable comments) in reasonable amounts will never hurt you.
If you make comments on high pr blogs, then im sure its going to help you.
The thing is, google needs to know if your "popular"(being talked about online), and the natural way to determine that, is blogs, social network comments and so on..
I should mention im not an expert in seo, but from what i have learned, then Yes, you can write blog comments ;-)

Forget posting comments shit old tactic, why you think Google brought out nofollow? If you find ******** then yah go for it.

Niche relevant blog comments work great, and I can't see them ever not working if they are done right (not spammy, provide a real comment and don't use your keyword for the anchor unless it makes sense)

I think they are worthwhile to add to your mix of links. But definitely wouldn't have the majority of your links all from blog comments .

Blog Comments are 100% effective. but must be done on Do-follow blogs only with Less OBLs.

Thanks

Blog commenting is still good for back-links creation but nowadays under following circumstances:

1. Blogs must be niche relevant
2. OBL must be low
3. Comment must be according to the topic
4. High PR
5. Must be do-follow

Thank you for your input. From what I can tell from personal experience. They are working, but so are other things; I wanted to know what all of you were thinking.

Apart from the link juice, I think that
if you comment on blogs where your
clients hang out, it will be a good way to
increase your online visibility and put
yourself out there.

I've ranked sites by blog comment spamming. Seems to be more effective when your link reads well in the comment. I honestly don't think ********/nofollow really matters unless you're trying to raise the PR of the site.

I would skip the do-follow... I have seen sites getting PR up just cause few no-follow comments on PR7-8 blog posts.
So do/no follow is not that important in my opinion. Points 1-4 however are extremely important.

i would comment on a blog if it had anything to do with my niche. The traffic from a blog within your niche is always a way to get traffic. It won't hurt your scrore in G if you make it quality comments.

So you where having a conversation with a spiritual guide of search engine optimization? Oh wait guru as expertise and knowledge? What makes him a Guru? Everyone that ranks a site on top 10 is a Guru right? SEO Guru :proud:

Back to topic, Google follows links even with the rel=nofollow, now with the nofollow no credit is given, or value is passed, but it helps the crawler identify new information but the link is not a priority or of high importance in the loop of crawling that particular page.

Doesn't people understand the concept of a crawl? A link is a link, but a nofollow link does not carry weight or importance but crawler will save all links for further review/discovery of new data. Now that is still a link that people can click and visit your site. So it does not matter if it gives value or not, you want people to visit your site correct? Isn't that why you do optimized for search engine in first place?

I would disagree on rel=nofollow. My observations proves otherwise... then again, it's just me.

P.S.

crap, I'm mega guru then...have loads of customer kw's in top3....

Man, i think you are right, all those so called "SEO guru" have just one thing in mind - $

Don't want to sound cynical, but the truth is out :D

Do a scrapebox blast, something happens, good or bad,but something happens to your serps,99% are no follow, tells you something doesn't it.So whilst nofollow will not pass PR it DOES have some weight.

Back on topic, yes relevant, high pr,moderated comments are great. In low comp niches a couple of dozen are enough to rank high if they are highly relevant.

Agreed with this, those are the most important thing for effective backlinks
