I have always used a page in front, but always have some menu links that deep link. I have always Combine ecomm with my blog so I Combine ecomm and blog post widgets in an array of topics that are front page worthy (based on analytics). Just what I do. I like my front page to be flexible.

Like everyone said, the homepage should be recent posts.

What i would suggest is that you should use recent posts, because it is the best way to gain more traffic to your webpage.

I like that no one really mentioned doing freebies at top of page, I'd think that was a bad idea too. I mean nothing wrong with a freebie but I'd like someone to be a bit more interested in my site than just a freebie and then bounce

That depends on the type of content you are going to publish on your blog, I think you should write a brief introduction to explain what your blog is about
