For a lot of sites that rank high, the backlinks are articles.
I was checking the backlinks for some site, and here are 3 similar articles that their SEO guy wrote:

h44p://www.activegrains.com/your-successful-sales-strategy/
h44p://adultatwork.com/how-to-hire-the-ideal-manager-on-sales/
h44p://www.wizardwebcreations.com/motivation-in-department-of-sales/

they have more articles like this.
my question is, once you write these articles, what do you do so the search engines notice them? ping them? blast them with scrapebox (comment and use them as your url)? RSS them? social bookmarking?

another question, how do you find these sites to drop your articles in? are these blogs, article sites, diary/journal sites?

another question, is it harmful if your anchor texts are too many?
if i want to rank high for 8 phrases, should i pick the best 2? does using all 8 hurt my site?
how do i decide which 2 to pick?

If you post your articles on a site like ezines the search engines will find them fairly quickly. For other places it really depends.

You can rank your site for as many keywords as you want, especially if they are related. I would not try to fit links for all your keywords in a couple of articles though.

Best practice is to make a separate optimized page for each term you want to rank for. You then create links to each page with the properly targeted anchor text. What I do personally is 80/20. I send 80% of my links to the optimized page and 20% to the main page. This gives each page a nice targeted attack and a good variety of links going to your main page.

Sometimes you can not do separate pages and then you just have to do the best you can. It really does depend on the type of site you have to work with.

can you look at the links that i posted? these are not really article sites, I dont know what they are. I went to the root domain and couldnt figure out how to post articles.

These are blogs and probably auto blogs that get their articles from blog networks like FTS, ArticleRanks, SEOLinkVine etc'

Blog network has two sides: 1. For people to submit their articles and 2. Blogs to receive the articles.

You can subscribe to these networks usually for a monthly fee (FTS has free and paid membership).

Spin them, submit to sites like ezines, and don't forget to hyperlink. 3 hyperlinks at the most for a 500 word article. To find the article sites, just look at what gets to the top of your keyword search results listings. The most important thing is that you have quality articles.

Remember the movie "Field of Dreams"... "If you build it, they will come". That DOESN'T happen in IM, articles have always been one of the most effective ways to market and get link juice. The autoblogs and spinning (I do both) have sometimes made it difficult to find good content (wheat from the chaff).

Even with an autoblog, I'll throw in some unique good content, then promote those articles with Social bookmarking, ping, linkwheels, videos etc.

I nuke the articles with SENuke (pinging, bookmarking and creating some web 2 profiles which link to the article)

post the articles to ezinearticles. after they get accepted, submit the rss feed to rss aggregators and ping the feed.
