Been browsing godaddy auctions for expired names. It always puzzles me that i see domains with bids like 10k 20k of older sites. Some have great alexa, backlinks, etc. But what do they do with these sites when they win? Sell links? Restore and build a new site like revive it? Use the power of the site to redirect to another? Even smaller sites selling for a few hundred bucks have no old content, hardly any links to it, ugly name, etc. I cannot understand how they are used. Figured people here would know. thanks!

What do you mean.. like they try to resell them to unsuspecting people touting the history, TF/CF, backlinks, etc. to make it seem like a good investment.

Yes. Turns out there are quite a few folks who are willing to pay 4 figures or more just cause your domain has high stats and quite a few backlinks.
Most domain flippers I have met have these kind of buyers. At times they can hold onto a domain for literal decades, grow the stats of the domain (build a site, get backlinks) and sell it to folks who value these. It can be awfully long and tiring, but can also be rewarding.

I agree a lot of times it's overpriced for what it is. I think in most cases they are trying to resell the domain name at a higher price (not necessarily build out the site). And yes, this happens with even terrible-sounding domain names.
But at some point it becomes overpriced and then someone is stuck with a domain name they paid a lot for and can't really recoup their investment, whether by reselling or building out the site as a revenue earner.

All these, and you can also rebuild the lost links and restore content and thus resurrect the site with its old authority.
It will become the original site - whatever it was. This is assuming the site was making enough to pay its running costs.
