What did OnlyFans do to make it big?

Oh yeah I don't doubt you. I've done some shady marketing myself in the past.

We all have.

But we can all agree on the fact that the OF marketing and PR was absolutely amazing, it really was the 2020-2021 goldrush.

If all the news articles said " during the pandemic these people make 10'000 per month with trading as a side income easily", nobody would have fall for it because it has been done for years already

The last time I saw this was the PR releases about shopify a few years ago.

"These people are making 1 million a year with Shopify, selling products they don't even touch"

The intelligence was to replace the facts that you need to create a long lasting business to focus on the "tool", because Shopify and Onlyfans are only this... tools. And people believe that if you are on the plateforme, everything will be easy as fuck and money will come from the sky.

Mailchimp did that 10 years ago too... great marketing

"these people automate their emails to become rich fast with Mailchimp"

Shady marketing and advertising like you both said, but it works.

Right now, it seems the current trend (outside of OF) is with cryptos, as it became so popular recently...

"work on a beach, use our bot which buys shitcoins of high value only, automating all the process for only 59 dollars a month"...

Well you get my point. Not to say OF does not work, every business well done works, but it's just a tool, between marketers we understand this...

Not sure if they did something right. They just became immensely popular because Belle Delphine and other girls started to jump on this hype because they thought they can earn a shit ton of money as well.

So basically they got all the publicity through influencers and then it spread mouth to mouth. As someone wrote before the name "OnlyFans" is easy to remember and says a lot about what the website is about.

It's 90% ewhoreing and a dogshit industry.

Let them do what they want but not calling them out when someone asks is irresponsible.

I didn't understand? what do you mean by not calling them out when someone asks?

They did a lot of social engineering to legitimize being a whore online. PR, for sure, but also a lot of semantic manipulation - - words like "content creator", "livestreamer" were re-appropriated and reframed. Before last year, it wasn't really a point of pride to say you were a camwhore - - but now you can label what you're doing as 'art/content creation' and you're on the same platform as legitimate artists and celebs...that would tickle anyone's hindbrain into taking the leap once you add in the 100K/month potential incentive.

I personally know a girl who got into it when she lost her job last April, and she barely lasted a few months before realizing the whole thing was a scam. I think a couple years down the line a lot of girls will have some reputation management cleanup to do, to remove all the content they put out there.

Yep totally agree, very accurate analysis. I know two girls who also did that and had their content leaked...

We are not really allow to speak about politics here, but I wanted to point out how some influential feminists had some disgusting view on it last year, telling that onlyfans was "empowering for women"... Empowering? virtual prostitution is by no way empowering... and it's an horrible brainwash for young girls

And with the competition being more and more present as months go by, some girls become absolute slaves to maintain their fans, doing things nastier each month to keep them...

I agree it is not easy to make money on such platforms, too much competition for girls. Only the top 1% make good money, the other 99% make below minimum wages I would assume. Also, it's not about the looks, 9 out of 10 girls are 8+ on a scale I think, it all about who is doing good marketing and which model has a lot of instagram/twitter followers.

It’s a platform just like any although as rightfully stated they bring zero really to the table in terms of platform traffic (unless other girls share you). I know girls on there making big money, I know girls making very little.. the ones making the big money are non stop - they treat it like a full time business, from the content, to the marketing to attract fans, they have assistants and all sorts of systems in place.

There are certainly girls on there killing it, I’m friends (and dated one for a little bit) with two of the biggest “creators” on there, one is a playboy playmate and the other a playboy model.. I’ve seen firsthand the amount of time and work involved when you’re hitting big numbers on there.

Most girls will never hit those numbers though as they assume just signing up and posting will bring in millions.. doesn’t work like that.

Yep I agree completely, it's like any other business.
IMO in any business its about higher walls and wider moats - - the barrier to entry to something like OnlyFans is so low, anyone with a functioning camera and internet connection can get in on the game, or think they can.
Also, I feel the traffic would tend to be high volume, low conversion - - just because a thousand guys simp on an IG post doesn't mean they'll pull out their wallet and pay.
Anti-incumbency tends to be pretty high in these niches as well - - novelty is rewarded, so unless you're a top content creator and have consolidated a loyal following, you'll be replaced by someone new.

Yep, and it's funny because we can see that the mentality of the get rich quick without any work is the absolute same as the "how to make 10'000 dollars next month without 0 skill using google" we find here every day

Appreciate ya linking my website in the original post (damn referral traffic. stop messing up my metrics!)

Fuck OnlyFans. For how popular it is, it is the worst platform for this stuff. Loyalfans is where it's at.

With over 7000 referrals on all those platforms listed combined, I can tell you firsthand that the majority of those girls & guys aren't making shit. I wouldn't say that the $180 metric is correct, because the vast majority of people that sign up don't make a dime (because they don't put in any effort). So you have thousands of signups for every person that makes at least $1, then the huge outliers making 5 figures+

Shit, I have no less than 1 girl reaching out daily for me to "manage" them, and they don't make money, they don't produce content, they bought into the dream of selling pussy pics for $20 and securing the bag. The ones that treat it like a business make bank. I had one girl sign up and make over €3500 in 4 days from like 800 IG followers. Then you have girls with 400k subscribers doing the least making $300 in a month.

No shit, I'm drunk right now but I can answer a whole lotta questions when sober. Thank the man upstairs for Grammarly or this would have been a mess.

I've been googling a lot and I tried to find the answer to that question.

I'm 100% sure that there were platforms like OnlyFans before OnlyFans, like FanCentro, ManyVids, SubscribeStar , ModelCentro... (https://cammodelagency.com/onlyfans-alternative/)

What did OnlyFans do to beat all of those existing competitors, what was so special about OnlyFans?

The reason they blew up as big as they did, is a combination of multiple well executed marketing strategies and also luck .

1. before OF blew up, Patreon was king and Premiumsnap, BUT Patreon banned all NSFW Adult content , besides artsy nudity
SNAP never allowed adult in their TOS but some camgirls used it as their OF and crushed it, BUT every year snap got stricter on this and banned creators for breaking TOS
This was a huge oppourtunity for Onlyfans , and it would say they got lucky on this one.

2. Before OF, Playboy was the king of celebrity nude content for decades and probably the pioneer,
Hef died, his son runs playboy and its not what it was before, they kept working with established models, but never created a social media effect , so they didnt enter the creator economy correctly

before social media and web 2.0 the celebrities in the world were a small circle who were pushed by the larger media companies , hollywood and the music industry giants.
but on social media and reality shows more and more ppl are semi famous overnight!

Npt famous enough to get mega rich like 80's and 90ies celebrities , but known enough to have large social media followings,
but at the same time, often no clear monetization stategy of their followers, besides some brand deals, and giveaways in many cases.

for a second influencers did get crazy freebies and payments, but then companies started realizing a lot of the followers were fake, and the ROI wasnt always worth it,
so yes certain social media influencers get paid, but nothing like getting 80% of the revenue your content generates,

So for Onlyfans marketing team, getting influencers who didnt make it to the mainstream, was a very smart move

3. doing PORN is very stigmatized, many females and males would love to earn a lot of income selling some content,
but being labeled a pornstar in many countries and cultures is still frowned upon, and your automatically considered the same as a offline Sexworker, and thats the reason it was never mainstream to be active in the adult performer industry.

Onlyfans however never was an official porn brand with a porn image, they never did the AVN awards , they didnt have their own channel on Pornhub, and their branding was always hot sexy mainstream influencers, but NOT pornstars.

you cant find a anal scene, or a gangbang on the official Onlyfans Twitter acount, and ofcourse their IG, Youtube are very clean.

On top of that more and more celebrities that sell content on Onlyfans, sold the exact same content they posted on IG before.
zero nudity.

Also a lot of content on Onlyfans is paywalled, so someone could say im an influencer, post SFW content on IG, Youtube, bikini content on their OF Feed, and only sell porn in PPV. Behind 2 paywalls, someone could do it secretly without getting caught.

AND on top of that you can block the IP of your entire country , so friends and family wouldnt even know what you sold on OF .
or know you did it at all,

Also being a content seller on the same platform cardi b, chris brown, Trey Songz, Fat Joe, sell content, is not the same as being on the same adult porn platform, with Jenna Jameson, Rocco Sifredi, for example, cause people know these names are 100% related to hardcore porn.
while Onlyfans is everything, musicians, comedians, rappers, nsfw content creators

So getting mainstream celebrities on board was also a major move, to keep creators out of the Pornstar , Slutshaming , Stigmatized zone
using diferent wording : Influencer, Content Creator, Girl next door that sells nudes VS Pornstar, Amateur Porn, Hardcore Porn, Starlet. Gonzo also helped
And having the overal branding clean, mainstream nothing targeted to the existing porn market mindgeek style

4. As others mentioned, the daily media articles: Nurse got fired for doing Onlyfans , shes making $100k a month now!
many cases creators pay for this, also since onlyfans is trending these clickbait titles also get more views, and sell more ads.

BUT at the same time, Its a pandemic now, ppl need money, have babies to feed, some ppl are homeless,
if someone doesnt have a marketing background, you could think this is an easy way to earn instant money.
This is Def a major factor for hundreds of thousands Onlyfans creator sign ups,

5. The pandemic, before #rona Onlyfans was big, and creators were making money,
but right around when the pandemic started, and Beyonce mentioned Onlyfans in the megan thee stalion remix,
shit hit the fan!
Onlyfans went from 100k plus creators to 2 million creators, and to 120 million subscribers.

i would say the pandemic fueled the insane growth of OF in 2020.

cause it was the only way for single dudes to have some kind of intimacy with hot girls, or guys during lockdowns.
And for many people who lost their jobs, it was their only potential source of income.

Also influencers got less super deals around the time the pandemic hit, so if your income goes down and you see other influencers buying new houses, a lot of people figured it was worth getting into

6. Last thing, IG has a very strict policy against nipples, Youtube as well. this turned out to be a huge break for OF

One smart company only needed to recreate what these companies did, and allow nude content,
market is well and nail it.
If mainstream platforms besides reddit twitter , allowed nipples, nudity.
the growth of Onlyfans wouldnt have been so explosive. not at all.
So thanks to Zuck, and the anti nipple policy of mainstream social media, another mainstream social media giant was born!

YOUR IN THE 0.1% OF ALL CREATORS VS Your post is deleted for breaking violations and terms of service ;) or worse, YOUR PROFILE IS BANNED for breaking the TOS! which one sounds better ?

The Onlyfans Squad got a freebie from Zuck and Alphabet here ;)
But maybe they do care now , cause IG blacklisted Onlyfans links in december :) and they have been deleting profiles very agresively

LONG STORY SHORT, they smashed it!
But it was also the right timing and certain things that happened in the world and within the creator economy that worked in their favor!
Mixed with years of hard work on other sites before OF, and other industries ( banking )

@Willyfish, do you think perhaps the $180/month might be counted by an average of all their accounts? Possibly if you removed inactive ones and ones not promoting, it might be higher per active user? Don't know. Some say they earn a lot. I know a girl who earns double of what I do, and I get a great salary here in the UK.

Its actually $140 lifetime average income.
at the same time there is a group of creators who are actually smashing it. but they are in the 0.01% for a reason.
theyre the top of the food chain
