What defines a premium domain?

I am interested in a domain but godaddy claims it is a premium domain so instead of it costing the usual $1 price (with coupon) it costs nearly $500. Who gives godaddy the right to claim a domain as premium and sell it for a higher price? Is there another way I can obtain a domain for cheaper then godaddys price? I know I dont understand exactly how that process actually works but id still like to know if there are other ways to go about obtaining a domain.

Well, it will have the premium price everywhere... This actually got me pissed of many times, as even some .com EMDs for 5K LS keywords of 2-3 words are premium.
However, I am nearly sure there is nothing we can do about this, just buy it, or buy an alternative for 1.

What about domains in auction? Ive heard that godaddy lists domains as "in auction" when they dont even have the rights to the domain

Premium domains are already bought, and are in possession of somebody. When the individual decided to post a domain for auction at GoDaddy, they can make the listing 'premium'. Not all domains are quality, some people just need them because they already branded a company - and need an exact keyword domain. Another common practice is domain squatting, but I do believe you are still able to obtain the domain name if you file a complaint.

Commercial domains that are easily recognized + most of the premium domains have search volume behind them.

This ^^^^^^ is correct.

Have you ever searched for availabilty of several domain names,
and spent a while deciding which to buy, eg 100 domains out of 300 available
then to return to Godaddy even a few hours later to buy them,
to discover that only 80 of those domains are still available?
thats because GD have reg'd the other 20 in that intravening period....

Just to add that GoDaddy (and although most registrars do it)
although they appear the worst for keeping a watch for domains with higher than usual searches numbers,
and if it appears to them that there a few different domainers searching for availablity,
they then register it themselves and try to sell it on as a premium the next day.

Is this so they have free domain research? Lets say they (GD) is able to buy each domain for $7, and they buy 30 domains that you researched. They only paid $210 and can sell all the domains at premium @ 500% up?

Of course! There is always selling the domain name directly to someone. There are also other marketplaces, that all charge a different percentage/fee.
