someone please correct me if i am wrong:
-in adwords low competition keyword means there are not a lot of people who are willling to pay for such keyword, and that does not mean that does not tell that seo competition is easy......was this my statement correct?

try traffic travis seo tools for competition check (v3 is free)
it gets it pretty right there

one quick way is to sum up the competitors PR (first 10 or 20)
so you check 10 and you got a score thats over 50 (i.e. average PR over 5) means you should stay away or be prepared for tough battle. anything that has score of 25 or lower, i would consider beatable in a few months...

    Thanks!
I have not tried traffic travis so far but I am using the
SERPS ATTACKS and MARKET SAMURAI trial version - are they good?
    which one is better?

Does a low competition only counts on the PR of the top 10 sites
    or on their backlinks too?

I don`t believe it does count only on the PR... on-site optimization and backinks matters too. I actually ranked a website a couple of weeks ago to number 2 for a keyword which had a total PR score of 32...but almost no on-site optimization for that keyword was done by those top 10 sites.

so how many backlinks does all the 10 sites need to have together so it will be a LOW competition? about 1000 backlinks together?

what did you mean when you said on-site optimization? did you mean H1 ,meta tags, domain name etc ?

Today the number of backlinks does not mean much. The quality of them is what you should think about. On-site optimization is not all about your mentioned factors, but also about the LSI keywords, keywords in text...also how the content is backlinked in other websites (how it is anchored) matters.

So don`t just look at the numbers - dig deeper and you will figure it out. If you have some questions just continue browsing/searching this board.

    Good luck.

If you use this method, then will you loose a lot of good opportunities.

High PR sites are not difficult to beat. What I'm more interested in, is the age of the site and the quality of the links combined with the anchor text on these links.

Make sure you do this ^ I always 'research' a keyword. Then once I actually get into I find out the competition isn't exactly what I thought it was. One trick I like to use is to find a competitor with the keyword in their domain. If they are ranked highly without too many backlinks then it will be an easy fight above them.

number of backlinks are not of much use today as many have spammy links, other rank 1st with few strong ones
i generally try to stay away from those where i see BH is used by my competitors
    It a dead heat usually...

so PR check is pretty good for fast filtering, then i look at their on site optimization
