What constitutes middle class???

I am on a discussion boards and everyone is mentioning that with the new "tax" deals of 2013, the middle class will suffer. What income level is middle class? poverty? rich? According to Uncle Sam?

I get that part, lol. But what I am asking is: what amount of income makes someone lower, middle or upper class? That's where Im lost.

Middle class is the set of people who are born in middle class, live a middle class life and die as middle class person because their mentality is that of a middle class person. In short, the ones who rarely grow. They are stagnant in nature.

If you work to survive, you're working class.

If you work to invest, you're middle class.

If you choose to work, you're upper class.

The income is absolutely relative, but for the sake of not wasting a post, how about $30,000 | $60,000 | $150,000?

The poverty line will change year to year, but this year it is around $23k/year. For the sake of the tax argument, people earning 24k to 250k/year are considered middle class. Upper class would be over $250k/year.

Class is pretty subjective. Class is a mindset, it's how you carry yourself through society. Where do you draw the line between classes? Judging someones class by how many material objects they do or do not own is not only dumb, but outright incorrect.

What class is Warren Buffet, working class because he drives an ordanary car and likes steak and chips down his local restaurant?

If you feel you can look down on someone you feel is below you...then you are probably middle class.

Middle class used to mean White collar Professional...company Jaguar...Children in Private school....now it just means the employed.

I wouldn't put the gap that big. According to a few sites I've seen, you're in the top 5% of Americans if you make around 150k per year or more. In my opinion, the top 5% would be considered upper class. You could even argue that being in the top 10% is upper class (112k per year or more).

Of course I'm talking about individual income and not a combination of someone and their partner.

What constitutes middle class???
