My first experience with computers was in school on 16bit machines (before 8086 CPUs). We learned BASIC programming language. I made a program to draw the picture of a car. A coleague of mine has drawn a picture of a naked woman. He got a 10. I got a 9. It was fair, the woman looked great. Black & white of course. Had no computer of myself.
Started owning a computer of my own in high school - a Pentium II at 333MHz, 32MB RAM, 3.2GB HDD, 4MB videocard, 14 inch CRT monitor, Windows 98. Upgraded eventually to 64MB RAM, 16MB Video card and bought one of those screens to reduce radiation because my eyes hurt after a few hours from the CRT monitor. Also at some point bought dial-up 56k modem and discovered Internet. A mp3 song took 30min-1h to download. My mom almost killed me when the phone bill came (600% higher than regular).
Went to an AMD Athlon 1.6Ghz, 256MB RAM, NVidia TNT2 32MB video card and 17 inch CRT monitor (flat, easier on the eyes, great colors, expensive), 80GB ATA HDD, upgraded eventually to 768MB RAM and GeForce4 videocard. Windows XP. Ad-hoc neighbourhood network with low speed internet access (a lot betetr than dial-up, and cheaper).
Went to an AMD Athlon X2 4000+, 2GB RAM, Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, GeForce 8600GT 256MB, 250GB SATA HDD, 22 inch LCD monitor. 1st upgrade added 2 more 24 inch LCD monitors and a secondary video card for them (GeForce 8400GS 512MB passive cooling). 2nd upgrade increased RAM to 4GB and bought Western digital Black Edition 500GB HDD, better cooler for CPUI and video card, still Windows XP (my all time favorite OS) so I only had around 3GB of RAM visible. Last upgrade: first of all BIOS update to support the new CPU I would buy, then Athlon II X4 640 CPU, 8GB RAM (ganked mode because unganked doesn't boot or does BSOD).
I also have a home server for WebDevelopment, torrent and backups - MiniITX motherboard (is really tiny), Intel DualCore CPU, 2GB RAM, onboard video, no monitor (remote admin using putty), MiniITX case, 1TB HDD Western digital Green Edition. OS is Debian Linux. The system consumes about 40 Watt in idle and 60 Watt in full load. Pretty neat for a full featured server that is on 27/7. In comparison only the CPU on my desktop or just 1 monitor consumes that power easily.
