I'm setting up a website where I need an "escrow" type payment gateway. Where users can make deposits and they're held until they release them. Does anyone know of a good solution? Authorize.net doesn't have this and I'm looking into Amazon now. Anyone know what Freelancer.com or similar uses?

    Thanks Much!

Are you sure? How do they hold the funds and then release them?

Basically Freelancer acts as a 'middle-man' between the freelancer and the buyer. Buyers must make deposits directly to Freelancer, it can be via PayPal, Credit Bank, Bank Wire and many other methods... once they receive the money, they will credit the buyer a 'virtual currency', the buyer can place it on hold until the project is completed (escrow type), and release the virtual money to the freelancer once they completed the requested job.

So basically it's not just using Authorize.net, PayPal, MoneyBookers as your payment gateaway. It must be complimented by
server-side scripting (PHP, Perl, ASP) to complete the full escrow function. You need a code to manipulate some sort of 'virtual currency' like Freelancer.com does.

I would recommend you to hire a web developer to get this done for you, or look for a pre-made solution (which can be cheaper).

    Hope this helps you :)

I do have a developer working on the project, but I'm curious as to what else is in there. What platform do they build off of? Is it PayPal (and then tweaked with server-side scripting), or some other processor. They need a merchant account to accept credit card payments so somewhere along the line it has to cross through one of them...

    Thanks Again!

I just logged into my freelancer account and when to the deposit page... they accept PayPal, MoneyBookers and Credit Cards. They accept the payments via the above payment processors then with server side scripting (PHP, ASP, Perl) they verify the funds were received into their accounts and the transaction is recored in the database and as I previously stated the money is assigned to the person who realized the deposit.

Yes, you need a server-side scripting language to compliment the payment processor and actually verify the fundings were received, credit the money, allow to put it on hold and then allowing it to be transferred. All payment processors have an IPN (Instant Payment Notification) to confirm the payment was received.

Here's a link to PayPal IPN Sample (PHP)

I understand all that (and thanks for the link), but what do they use to accept credit cards? Is it through PayPal Pro, Authorize.net, 2CheckOut?? I can't seem to figure it out...
