I have seen keywords do this:

rank_changing.jpg

It can happen randomly or after buliding some links. What causes this? It seems like it wouldn't make sense for the to move like this because it seems they should either be high, or low, or trending in one direction, but not changing all the time.

If you are doing constant onsite changes, it might be the case. Or, if Google is ranking different pages, it could give you a graph like that. I haven't Google do that lately, so I am speaking from memory only, but that happened to me where I was getting the homepage ranked on page 4, then an inner page ranked on page 5 with the homepage nowhere to be found. This was going on when I first put up the site and was just updating regularly, no links at all.

I haven't made any changes to the target site, just doing some link building. Interesting that you say it could be different pages ranking, though. Are you meaning that one day the homepage ranks, and then the next day a different page is ranking lower (instead of thomepage), and then the next day it's back to the homepage ranking better, etc.? That seems strange, too, though, becuase I would think taht Google would keep the same page ranking for a certain keyword, but I guess it changes.

Yeah, that's what happened to a site of mine. After a while (and some links) it only kept one of the URLs ranking with the other one 10 spots or so behind.

Why would it change the ranking URL, though? These are inner pages. So they should rank anyway.

crawling is really slow for the past few weeks. seems like the google bot is going crazy.
