What causes the "google dance"?

I was on the front page for a few weeks straight, then back on page 2 for like 2-3 days and now back on page one. What causes dancing like this?
 
This is just G rebuilds and updates rankings ..
 
if you want to have high rankings, just start dancing with google
 
I find that if I build backlinks and the keywords start dancing, it is a good sign. If they didn't move at all I would be a tad worried. Although this is usually before I reach the first page.
 
If your website is new, position fluctuation is a common thing, do not worry and continue building links.
 
But the question is, what caused the google dance four years ago.
 
Fluctuation with the algorithm - tools like algoroo and mozcast are handy to see the turbulence in the serps.

Google Adjusts to new updates. Also Updating rankings.

Try increasing the amount of backlinks to your page it should help keep it stable.
