What can we do better? How can we make more money?

I have been operating a very small niche authority website since July 2012 - we've had over 2.2m views in that time and the site gets approx 250k visits per day.

We're doing really well with getting volunteer writers and we manage to put out 6-10 original articles per day. We do ok on selling backlinks and Adsense we've just started to use and that makes around $120-150 per month but I think we should be doing so much more. We've secured a deal where we revenue share with an international bookmakers. We're taking 30% of losses made through our site. So we hope that will bring in some good returns. This site sponsorship has meant we're able to upgrade the site to include some live commentary and live stats and some other features, as well as an iPhone and Android app (all in development)

But we think we should be doing so much more. Can anyone critique it and let us know what needs doing? I'm open to any offers people have for services to get us more cash.

I know - we think we can get upto and over 1M per month but we really need to be making more money from it.

Get selling fucking official gear ASAP. I would be dying if I had 250k visitors and no income...

Exactly - so you think an online shop is the one? We did try an amazon affiliate store but it made like $7 in 3 months. Our readers seem to be hitting the site, reading the news and then leaving. People average 1.4 pages per visit.
 

250k a month and you make 150$?

Man, you better think of other ways how to monetize those visitors.

You can even get in touch with the Futboll club yourself.
 
ur doing it wrong... those ads are in the wrong place. with that amount of hits you should be earning like 250 per day minimum

In that case, they are not really buyers.

They just come to check for info and that's it.

Have you ever tried content locking? If no, then try it for a couple of sites and see how much you can make out of it as a test drive!
 
If anyone can help us make it happen I'm happy to give 10% rev share for a long term partner. We're aiming to take to 1M views by end of year.
 
Amazon affiliate? Well, im really surprised it didn't work.

Anyways, like you can simply try BSA and sell your space via CPM... You must surely make more money than what you are currently making.
 
We got rid of BSA not long ago as it wasn't selling at all. We're re-designing the site so can try again with BSA once that's done but yeh - it's really not making anything like what you'd expect. Or I'd hope.
 
Im fucking shocked man... Tried any CPM advertising platforms? I guess that is what would probably give you more money...
As someone else has previously said... if nothing else works, lock the most visited urls...
 
We don't really have anything that's a consistent big hit in terms of pages. It's transient because we deal with latest news. So the news is interesting or relevant for that day. Sometimes only 12 hours. Then it'll probably not get much in terms of hits after that.

CPM we have a couple of the mobile ads on there. But they make next to nothing compared to the hits I KNOW they're getting.
 
250k visits/day? you mean 250,000 visit/day? like 250 thousand visits A day? and you're making $150/m?

you should really get in touch with someone who know what their doing in terms of advertising.
i'll join the guys above - open an online store for a start.
 
Content Locking a site that already has a low CTR is bad. Seeing how your visitors don't care enough to go through your site, locking it will only send them even further away.

Also sending an email to the club might backfire and get you a big "CEASE ACTION" notice.

You should make people want to subscribe, invest a little, giveaway some tickets to a match and get email addresses to which you can later on sell tickets, merchandise, and assure yourself that people will keep on visiting your site through the newsletters you send

You guys are so unprofessional, dont just tell the man to stick advertisements everywhere! Unlike 90% of you people, he actually cares about his visitors and doesn't want to suck out every penny out of them!

I just realised a put 250k a day, sorry, I mean per month - and yes as said above, it's important that we don't ruin the experience for people. We want to make our site the first choice for United fans, become part of the routine. But also make some money.
 
well, that changes things haha. 8k visitors a day with the adverts where you've got them won't give you much. A friend of mine runs a newspaper in the UK and averages around 3k/day and was getting shit money as well, mainly because of the ads positioning.

Anyaways, I think the only way to monetize that is by doing incentivized offers "get this official tshirt if you complete an offer" blablabla. Or just collect emails and sell them...

We have a good relationship with the club. They are well aware of our existence - all the news is all original. They actually support us.

I see pretty bad adsense placement on the site. With a god placement it is almost impossible to earn less than $3 per each 1000 views. The sidebar is an area on anyone's site visitors do not see at all.

250K visits = 750K pw = $2000+.
