That is OK, my wife is from Western PA and half the time makes no sense so they should get along handsomely.

If a writer is referring to a single person, but doesn't wish to reveal their gender, 'them' can be used as a gender-neutral pronoun. I often use gender-neutral pronouns when referring to the members of this forum, either when they don't specify their gender or when I suspect they're lying about their gender.
