As an example I have no idea what social bookmarks are or why they speed up the process of getting crawled by Google and others. I'm not asking for this question to be answered (although that would be a nice bonus!!) but rather for the best book to dive into on IM.

Hello slybear,
Have you tried looking through the forums here about the things you want to learn about? There are a lot of posts that will help you out greatly. Another option is to look up the items on Google.

You don't need a book. Just read BHW constantly and you'll learn enough to create and profit from your first niche site. Social bookmarks and any other type of links speed up the indexing process because when Google discovers a link to a site, they follow the link and index the site it leads to.

Books will be a great start, but will not be exhaustive on issues centering on IM. You have to do your research and read up blogs, that's how to get answers to the very important why questions. Forum discussions like on here will throw light on issues from different perspectives that come from people with actual day-to-day experience: that's why they're better.

OP, no one book covers everything and usually by the time it is in print, it will already be slightly out of date.

I would start by visiting this forum daily and read about 1-2 hours, everything will become more clear everyday.
