I think it depends on the type of site you are making and there are some good suggestions above, but in general on all sites I use w3 total cache, wp smush.it, bj lazy load for the purpose of making the site load faster. I try not to use too many plugins overall because they will affect speed. If you think plugins may be affecting your page load speed you can check their effect with P3 plugin performance profiler.
