It is not stupid.

Certain links work one day and another day they no longer work.

Google always changes.

You can't think that the same types of links will always work.

For example, is xrumer stupid?

No.

A few years ago it worked wonders, but now it no longer works.

This does not mean that it is stupid.

You simply have to adapt to new changes.

Not trying to graveyard but just want to share my experience...

Whenever I try to up the rank for my sites, I always use the wiki links as a way to help them get up there. You see, when I give them article directory links or social bookmarks they get a minor SERP boost but the wikilinks work in such a way for me that it solidifies the positions and not let them slide down because they are a great way of saying to Google that your links are diverse. In my opinion, this has been a tactic of mine that whenever do follows are coming their way, I assist them with nofollows (although it isn't tiered, everything is in tier 1).

Wikis are good for backlink and IP diversity.

Good to blast Tier 1 Web 2.0 properties. But I use high PR and edu wikis to blast money site. The amount is around 100 for the first tier of wikis.

I'm using the Wiki Links just for the link diversity and only submit my website om High PR and edu Wiki's, which is the best way to use the Wiki's, in my opinion.

I own some hardcore wiki link building software and it works really well, SERPS take on hell of a pounding but with software being available it's going to die pretty damn quick

wikis are very effective
but....
you gotta be careful about it.
1st. there are a LOT of wikis you do not want to hit
if, say, the wiki for semantic indexing got a page about your site put on it, well....you just told google's data analysis arm that you are spamming and gave them a copy of the footprint.
or if you spammed the wiki of a community that google employees are members of, you probably just are asking for trouble.

it's been said before that some wikis seem to be able to signal directly to google
and i know that those two wikis are not the only honeypots out there.
i just know i saw those two wikis in the big list that was shared here earlier.

i refuse to purchase wiki services from people because of this
after all, if you buy wiki services, you'll go with the one providing the most links
not the one that has the most filtered and safe list.
and it's not their site, so what do they care?

i use wikis, i go wikijacking, make sure the wiki is over 1 month old, with no recent edits, and is targeted at the niche i'm targeting
then i replace it's links with links to article submission livelink results

add it to a list
comment blast the list at the end of the day, then ping the crap out of it with about 3k pings / site

Wiki links are great to get IP diversity and some link diversity too. However, unless you are only targeting High PR wikis, I would recommend that you have better link sources to keep your rankings steady.

You can have a high PR result form Wiki posting. this is very helpful when you are doing the back linking.

I find wiki links hard to crawl and index them. i have submitted these to Lindexed to crawl and index, but is really stubborn in indexing these links.

Wikis are no follow i would guess it provides more often a good link diversity but not clear with rankings.
Havent seen any one getting high PR results from just wiki blast but more or less it can help to a small extent.

Waste of time, you're time to can be better spent building quality FOLLOW links.

they don't give you as much of an SEO boost as it used to!

I get a lot of traffic from my wikipedia links (the main wikipedia) and even though they are no followed you know google still looks at them as I got a huge boost in rankings after obtaining wiki links
