What Are Your Thoughts On Wiki Links?

I have been busy finding new link sources to test, and wiki links is one of them.

I am going to do my own tests regardless, but has anyone here tried them? (I am sure many have)

What kind of results did you obtain?

Did you target several anchors?

Did you target EMD (Exact Match Domain)?

Pros:
* wikis frequently have high PR / trust.
* easy to spam although frequently captcha'd on the signup.
* lots of wikis out there
* the shittier and less common wiki scripts are especially easy to spam
* you can use whatever anchor text you like

Cons:
* many wikis are n0follow
* many wikis require a captcha on every post / edit
* the nature of a wiki means that edits are very visible and easy to spot. This means that on a highly moderated wiki, your posts won't last for long - this can cause large fluctuations in your backlink profile, which we know G doesn't like. So wikis are only one small part of the backlink puzzle - too many wiki links being added and then dropped from your indexed backlinks is bad news.

I used to hammer wikis hard (years ago before mediawiki went n0follow) and they used to work really well. I only use wiki links in moderation these days.
 
In my experience, Wikis are best used on Tier 1 to even out an over optimized link profile, using LSI, raw link variations and the brand name as anchors. I've yet to see hard data anywhere that Wikis are - in themselves - powerful SERP movers (i.e. there is always something latent in the link profile that is the better candidate when a positive SERP movement has been experienced after a wiki blast).

Frankly, NoFollow wikis are a poor choice for use as Tier 2, for reasons that I'm assuming are obvious.

EDIT: In case it's not obvious, when using Wikis their best use is to garner authority; ergo, using NoFollow wikis as Tier 2 is unlikely to pass any authority from not only Tier 2, but any tiers beyond that in the pyramid. The moral is to use them as either the 1st or last tier, but not in between.

Recently I have purchased a service here on the forum, it was about 3 tiers of Wikis. First tier 400, second tier around 2000 and 3rd tier 10 000+ some xrumer blast. It was actually nicely done but no serp results at all. I have to say that I was kind of scared to use only 1 or 2 anchor texts so I use 6-7. Anyway there was no increase in the rank.
However, I am still using the Wikis for second tier, blasting the Web 2.0 and the results are pretty good.
 
Wiki's has become an ambiguous term over the past few months as more and more "Wiki" services have been rolled out due to their original popularity.

The good, old school, wiki style links generally have amazing trust/authority as Autumn had pointed out. But, the downside is that as your site gains rankings, you're footprint will be picked up and you'll get greedy spammers that screw up the game for everyone. They'll basically find your page, delete the whole Wiki, and add their link. Dumbass moves like that ruin the game for everyone.

If you do it right, and make it look legitimate, Wiki links are great. But, it's all about placing the link intelligently so that it doesn't get pulled down.
 
I agree with what people said above.

I have hammered alot of sites with Wiki Links in various forms and even tried a few services here.

Mostly I see no increase in traffic / links or anything else as far as short term goes -- and that's because some of these are getting deleted / moderated etc so it's hit or miss

.... but I do think overall it's smart to include them in your overall link building because diversity is a must and the tools that create them are really easy to use... so time wise you can set them up really quickly.

Though they were probably great a while ago.... If you look at a lot of these sites now, they are a haven for spammers and are probably going to loose their value over time.
 
I got the 1000 wiki blast from a provider in the BST section.

It was for a brand new site that was an EMD.

The site was in position 9 for a 60k search term. I used the wiki blast and some homepage links on a few high PR pages owned by friends, some where in the same niche. O yea also ordered 200 G00gle +1s spread out over inner pages.

The site is now sat at #2 I cant confirm the jump in serp was from the wiki's alone as this was weeks after my first link building run.

The first run consisted of:

Tier 1
Web 2.0's

Tier 2
Forum profile links
social bookmarks
comment blasts
and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting
 
I don't hit wikis as hard any more but I do use them for ip diversity. To be honest I think thats all they are good for. From my experience, they have a lifespan of 4 - 6 months.

Most of my wikis from say before Sept 2011 have been modified by some spammer. Annoying, but what can you do. Thats why I use them for second tiers and onwards so if there's a drop off, it doesn't directly affect my sites.

For what its worth, I can't say if they were different pre panda 3 or whichever this update is, I've lost track... my sites weren't hit so I can't tell the effectiveness of wikis before or after. Anyways here's a partial screenshot of my March 2012 wikis from most recent.

i did wiki links (mixed anchors text) + social bookmarks (from a BHW member) on a blog
i moved in serp from *247 to *19
 
I think wiki links have higher PR and can easily be indexed by those crawlers and spiders.

Dude, you don't need wikis, 2.0s, high pr links.
All you need to do is 301 and use rankblasters and you're #1 for the most competitive keywords.

Isn't that how it goes?

If you have been paying attention, that is not how it goes.

Things have changed.

New links are required with the Google change.

Stay up-to-date and do not troll.
