What are your thoughts on email lists?

Just thought I'd throw this into the lounge room. What do you think of email lists?

Have you used them with success?
Do you think they're a useless?

To follow your answer for either question: Where did you get your list?

I've never used them before because I think it's basically annoying people, however, I'm sure the law of averages works with these and you would convert at least 5-10 for every 100 email you send. Obviously I have no idea what I'm talking about, which is why I'm consulting the forum.

Any information would be useful and "up-to-date" information would be best.

Yes I have used them before and I have reasonable success with them. It all depends on how recent and targeted the data is and what it is that you are trying to sell. As for where I get my data from, I wouldnt even disclose that to my closest friends, and I would be suprised if anyone else gave you that information. The conversion rate you have suggested of 5-10% is very optimistic. At absolute best, with the finest most expensive data you can buy, you would be lucky to hit a 2% conversion rate. I average around 0.25%.

Something to note when purchasing email data is check its sourcing. You want to find out exactly how they collected the data, how recent it is and whether each record has opted into marketing emails. Never go cheap with email lists. Cheap = wasted revenue.

Hey Slim, Thanks for being open and honest mate. Some good information there. I guess it would be worth my while spending the dedicated day and building my own niche targeted list.

Not necessarily. It all depends on what you are trying to promote. If, for example, you are focusing on a high value niche (FOREX etc) where you only really need a couple of guys to convert to make bank then sure, scrape google for targeted emails and hope for the best. If, however, you are promoting something with less value (Bingo on a RevShare model), then its all about volume, so you may want to look at purchasing a list as you will struggle to get that many records manually.

If you have a budget in mind I may be able to get you some data lists, but I would take 5% commission, other than that have a search around and see what you can find. There are plenty of companies around that should be able to help you.

Slim knows the deal. I have been involved with email marketing and data brokers for almost a decade. Cheap volume with unknown source or email column only is usually garbage. Email marketing can be a useful tool but there is a lot to it when you start to scale and the results are usually not as great as one would hope with bought lists. There are factors many people do not realize. One example, lets say you purchase a list of 1 million bizop records. 50% of that will be HAMMY which is either undeliverable due to your limited resources or they are just fake/toss addresses.

The most responsive lists are ones you build yourself in a specific niche and carefully manage but you can certainly have success with purchased lists if you know what you are doing.

I get my data from friends in the industry from networking over the years.

i have some services that are only of interest to certain professionals. can you get emails that target groups like mechanics, pilots, doctors, accountants, etc.?
 
yeah we have lists like that. just bought the infousa, d&b and jigsaw db's. are those the only four professions you want?
