SEMRush offers a site audit with some useful metrics as a starting point:
You’re going to want to analyze their:
- on-page SEO.
- Website structure (check for navigational issues, broken links, etc).
- ensure user friendliness of the website.
- check backlinks, quality of backlinks, social media, etc.
- Do a competition analysis and gather those same details about their competitors.
There should be a roadmap of where they are now and where they could be after your services. There should be a clear plan of action in place.

Even though all the above comments are of great help, I would add this: make sure you understand your client's goal.
I used to work for an online retail company, the owner paid huge bucks for the so called 'best SEO company in Australia'. They provided us with an SEO report after a complete audit. I checked all the warnings and what they advised us we change. We got 10 pages of
- missing h1
- missing meta description/title
- double h1 tag
- etc.
for pages like account/cart/about us/etc. which we obviously didn't care to rank!
So before submitting the report of your audit, make sure your audit is relevant. Quality > quantity. I'd rather have less pages but narrowed down to my home page, collection and products.

There are many templates for this that you can find online, and I will share some info about the types of information that we usually include in those reports, and they are related to:
- Doing On-Site SEO and checking the site's speed, quality of its domain, user experience on it, compression of images, and so on.
- Checking some technical elements like tags, meta-tags, alt-tags in image galleries, analyzing sitemaps, robots.text file...
- Analyzing mobile friendliness and responsiveness on other devices
- Checking keywords and determining the quality of the site's content
- Analyzing internal and external links that belong to the site
- Doing competitor analysis
There are of course other steps as well, but these are some crucial information that should be part of the quality SEO audit.
