What are PBN Links & its impact?

I hear a lot of PBN links can boost the rank, but I always wonder how it works.
1- How different are they from Guest Post?
2- How do they boost the search rank?
3- Why and when does it become risky?
4- What are the metrics that tell that the PBN is powerful or among the best?

PBNs especially from expired domains with existing authority and backlinks, makes those links more powerful

PBNs are controlled networks for backlinks, guest posts happen on external legit sites. They boost ranks by passing authority, but risk penalties if footprints or low-quality domains get flagged.

PBNs are built solely for link building purposes and are not really legitimate sites. A guest post is usually sold based on the fact that the post you're buying will be on a legitimate business, informational, or active blog site (though this is often a grey area)

When the sites that you buy links from are obvious link farms, or you buy too many exact match anchor links to sub-pages.

For me it will be how many pages are indexed in Google when you perform a site: search on the domain, and how quickly a new page gets indexed on the domain.

As a white hat SEO guy, I also have the same type of questions in my mind regarding PBN.

@Steptoe - Can you please inform me why PBN links are considered to be more powerful as compared to relevant guest post links?

Let's say, 20 guest post links from DA 50 legitimate blog or 20 links from a DA 50 PBN blog - which will be considered more powerful in terms of link juice and ranking?

I don't consider PBN links to be more powerful than guest post links.

We can say powerful or effective, because these blogs are designed for SEO only, so you can get backlinks which will definitely index. So, you will know for sure that you will get a backlink of a specific DA, DR and from an old domain with a clean history. Most of the time, these PBNS are kept clean for spam and toxicity. Also, they have traffic, so you can expect some traffic to your website too.

Also, these PBN networks always try to increase the authority and other metrics for SEO, so eventually they will benefit your website too.

Also, you might get a backlink on the home page if they allow, but it might be for a short time; it can give a boost for a while to your website.

20 Guest posts with DA 50 are as good as 20 DA 50 PBN, but you can expect PBN DA to go up to 60 in a short time, but it might not be the case with guest posts, also, indexing is not a guarantee with guest posts.

So, continuous aggressive SEO can backfire on the network, so hit your website too.

What is BAD PBN:

If PBN does not guarantee you an index, simply avoid them. If you see the PBN with many backlinks in a short time, avoid it. Also, look at the SPAM score.

you place the link to your site, on the homepage of another website and that link gets most of the power that the homepage has (which is usually a lot of it since the homepages of sites tend to have more authority than the other pages)

guest posts are content (blog posts usually, or - in the case of news sites - news articles) that has its own unique URL, which is always different from the URL of the homepage...

not sure how to answer this one to be honest, but hopefully you can see why getting a lot of strong votes from other websites (which is basically what authority is) can boost your rankings

it becomes risky because it can influence google rankings and google doesn't like it

And it becomes risky when google can figure out that your links are purchased / built by yourself instead of being received naturally, by other people linking to your site because they genuinely find your content useful or relevant.

If you manage to keep google never figure out that you're building links you'll be able to get away with the robbery (rankings in this case), which is what SEO in general, and link building in particular is all about

- it has good authority (DR)
- it ranks in google and gets google traffic (therefore google trusts it, therefore the link juice / authority you get from this PBN is valuable / powerful)
- it's a real website (doesn't have artificially inflated DR just so it can sell "high authority" links to newbies that can't tell real DR from fake DR)
- in general, it's a real website

To the last point, yes, every website that exists can - technically - be considered a PBN site if you manage to get a link from that website's homepage (imagine having a backlink from the homepage of Forbes, Sony, Cosmopolitan, Amazon, NBC, etc... then you would have stuck gold indeed and such backlinks would probably keep you ranked #1 for every keyword for your entire life and for the life of google.... hypothetically speaking)

But anyway, in reality, a PBN is just a network of sites that you own (hence the PBN, or Private Blog Network) and which you can get backlinks from at the push of a button... at least that's how it worked initially when PBN was first invented. But nowadays, newbies call everything a PBN because they can't make the difference between Private and Public Blog Networks, or between PBNs and guest posts, or PBNs and web 2.0s, etc...

There's all sorts of private blog networks, some are built using expired domains that carry a lot of weight, and those can really give your SEO a big boost. But others might be kinda sketchy. So you gotta do your research and check the metrics on those sites before you go getting any backlinks from them.

Unlike guest articles,PBN links use authority from expired domains to help improve ranks.but they can be harmful if google notices them,and their strength is dependent on DA and TF.

PBN can either tank your site or rank your site . I have seen lot of websites getting good rankings with good networks. But, issue is lot of pbn dont have their tracks covered. I am more into guest posting . That is much more mature approach.

second that, these can be removed anytime or website can turn into spammy website in no time. I have seen PBN just selling links all over the place, just one look at website and you can guess its spammy website.
