what ahppens after you analyze your competitors backlinks?

say i am trying to rank #1 for a small niche keyword.
I checked spyglass and see that the #1 guy on google for that keyword has 57 backlinks. What do I do now?

Make yourself a sandwich and settle in to read quite a few e-books.

Build 58 backlinks....

While 57 links seems easily beatable you need to look at more than just the number of links you also need to look at the quality. Suppose 40 of those links are from pr5+ pages? Suppose they are all from crap sites? Suppose he has had those links for years?

What you need to do is look at his links and then build more and better than what he has until you are number one instead of him.

no no what i meant was, should i try to get backlinks also from all the sites he has backlinks from ? (and then more)

create more backlinks than he has, now it also depends like volund on the quality of backlinks which your competition has

Yes. You can do that. Or you can also check other sites that weighs more than his backlink's source.
