Went from pg 2 on Google to pg 5 in a few hours

After a few weeks of endless research I finally took some action and put a blog up on my niche. I've been working on the site for the last week. I got that baby up to page 2 and its been there for the last past 2 days...I then checked it earlier today only to find out its now on page 5. :banghead: I did some video marketing, bookmarking, and also got a hub and squidoo page up. I haven't updated my blog with new content since Wednesday. I've been mostly working on backlinks, like blog commenting and the digg 365 method. So my question is how did my rankings drop so quick? If anyone got some tips that would be cool.

it will probably keep bouncing between pages but make sure you do at least 1 new post every day or so and increase it over time
 
It'll bounce around with methods you mentioned. Anything else you've been doing to promote?
 
Google always does that with new sites. Usually in the first week you will the front page and then suddenly you will just disappear. That virtually happened to all of my sites :(
 
Look up google freshbot, where google indexes something high because it's new, but not necessarily for the long term, until a different google bot caches for the longer term. If it disappears it could reappear back in as soon as a week. Just keep promoting and tell us how it goes. Either that or you're viewing google logged in or logged out, which gives you different results.
 
Thanks for all the input guys. I've been doing more promoting and im up to page 3. so im gonna keep doin what im doin and see if i can get it on page 1. :cool:
 
You have to just keep trying everything and keep optimizing, do not try to understand the google, the google will drive you insane. *Maniacally Laughs*
 
you have to take a step back, and remember that many other people are 'working' the system at the same time! in a niche with some competition you should expect a daily/weekly/monthly battle for position.

SEO is never set and forget!

First don't be so anxious ;) everything will be just fine

I recommend that you will do the following:
1) about off page SEO, check that your title + H1 + H2 are not so similar to each other and not too spammy.

2) Continue with the link building with the right anchored text (if you can get free links somewhere without certain anchor - thats fine, it helps too.

3) Most important - SEO basically takes some time, so try to be patient, google might dance from time to time, give google some time to digest your site

most of the guys here said some good things so keep in mind ;)
