Well the title says it all. Just curious to know what it takes to start a search engine like GOOGLE. Post the requirement list with your knowledge. :)

2 PHD's in computer Science working for you and a VC firm backing you with 6 rounds of funding totaling $30,000,000 to get the ball rolling.

signup with adsense, and use "custom search engine" or what its called, then implement it on you site, then you ahve your own search engine :) (kinda)

bandwidth, storage space, a crawler script and an awesome idea

Just forward all the search queries to google. If you want, you can manipulate the results to put ads or, for example, make one political candidate look better than the other. :)

At one time Yahoo used google for all their searches.

You guys forgote the most important thing ! a time machine to go back to the 90s ... thats if you wana start something as big as google and make it successful .

Enough to give a guy 5 bucks every hour to use Bing to search for users queries which have been mailed to him. He then mails what he finds back through the post.

Postage costs are extra.

First off..You would want to change the game.Make a search engine with everything google does not offer.Like no ban hammer.A copletely different ranking sytem.Live stats on your search results that shows how many users are on a site at any given time.Money of course to start small and build it up.Just a few ideas.

Or you could make a search engine where they have to pay to use it, but people manually look up answers for their questions on existing search engines and authority sites.

So, if someone types "How to make coffee" they will go to Google and search for them.

there are no requirements. All you need is a script and a host/server. It's not like there are any legal procedures or anything, if that's what you're asking.

Well well well.. lots of ideas eh?

@xbon869x: hmmm Well if ban hammers are not there then scammers will enjoy and thr will be no advertisers :)

Would be cool if someone could make an image search engine.

I know many exists already but (at least I don't know) not where you upload an image as the search criteria, and then it searches through the web for similar pictures

Umm... That is called Chacha.com and it is a garbage search engine. Plus who the hell would ever pay to use a search engine when you have Google that is free?

The search world is nearly impossibly to make a dent in, Google has this covered for many years to come... Microsoft's Bing will just die a slow death.

Because with google you still have to wade through pages of information to find the answer. The point of my idea is that the work is done for you. Like cheap, paid researchers.

And btw I hope Bing stays around and competes, competition is always good to have around.

<3 Microsoft.

Maybe you'll have better chances with a niche-type search engine, a script that crawl results in that specific niche, not based on G's..don't know..something of that type. A nice design and solid promotion.

See blackle.com, they made their search engine black and advertised it as a alternative search engine because of their energy saving reason LoL. They are using google custom search :)

Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.

Mmmm false, unless you are interested in "Rivers flowing downstream in Africa" and search for "Rivers", then yes, you will have to wade through. Type in a question and lots of the time someone on Yahoo/Wiki answers has had the same exact one.
