Weird hidden links

Looking at the backlinks of a competitors site (which ranks quite well) through opensiteexplorer I've seen links like these:

muw.edu/classes/clowery/excel/Tutor11/Cases/EZNet.mdb?go=partydates&location=FULLMOON

hud.gov/offices/hsg/rmra/oe/rpts/hecmdata/hecmdata_current.zipx?mode=past&pno=12412

Anyone know what they are, whether they are worthwhile or a big risk and how you can get them? OSE seems to value the 'links' pretty highly.

Surely someone here would know? Just to clarify the above urls show up as linking pages in an OSE report

Well, the first one is a database, the second is an advanced zip file, but how to get there??? I don't know! Some sort of script injection?

Thanks for having a look, Dowser.

I opened the second one - the zip file. It's was a 166MB .csv file inside it with 880,000 rows of what appeared to be some sort of financial data. No evidence of any URLs in the csv file at all so I have no idea how the link is in there.

I do know that hud.gov is a PR8 and OSE gives this linking 'page' a 48 for authority and the domain an 88 so it's a valuable link I guess.

Anyone else seen this before?

EDIT: Oh i should add that the site that it links to is nothing to do with these authority sites and has been actively SEO'd so there has definitely been some sort of deliberate SEO to get the link in there.

Some sort of exploit, don't know this particular one but chances are the guy who does wont share it. Its simple stuff the hard part is getting the file on that site in the first place.

However, these are sloppy sites with many places to more easily place links; hud is probably one of the easiest .GOVs out there it has thousands of places to manually put a link in real easily so no need to get so fancy.

Create an account there, then click your username in the top, click "edit this page" and drop an article with links.

yeah, there are ton of edu/gov WIKI sites you can backlink from, some PR7-8.

Using class plainlinks you can hide them/ or rather blend in with text so it is not as easily detectable as links to viewers.

Note of advise, if you do add links to certain section, you might want to "edit" few other sections afterwards, just minor changes like putting in a space or dot or something like that. Idea being who ever looks at history will see some stupid changes made and might not think you dropped the link.

You want to do it as I said, after creating a new account click your user name then edit this page.

That way you're putting it on your account's profile article space. If you go dropping links in some other wiki page that pisses people off and will get removed especially since there are changelogs so even if you mask it on say a period or something it tells others you did it.

If you're doing it on your account profile though this is the best way (this is how I have WikiPRO do it and its by far the best way to get them to stick after lots of trial).

Thanks guys - great advice. So these links as you suggested will still carry the same sort of power? I would have assumed the links would be barely indexed let alone ranked as a 48 page authority on OSE

They are different so no they will probably not carry the same weight.

What I am saying is finding an exploit to actually allow you to access files like a spreadsheet on a .GOV or .EDU is not an easy thing and is generally not shared publicly but rather the result of an individual tech savvy person so you're better off just taking the easy route to get the next best thing because chances are you're not going to be able to duplicate what he's doing.

You're still getting links from the same domain, add some more links on other ones as well and you can outrank him. You don't need to match every link he's got.

Have the last couple of days started looking at dropping links on wikis (creating new pages, or a sly link on existing page), but havent been able to figure out to change the class, so doesn't have that glaring little square signalling is an external link. Care to share how do you do this?

You are right, you can and should create own pages but I was referring to inserting links into neglected, already indexed urls with high PR on the actual url. There are many pages that are not being monitored anymore. I do agree that ussually links inserted into excisting high PR pages don't last sometimes, but mostly because competitors change your urls to theirs, not the actual owner of the page, yet in many cases the link will stay long enough to get registered by G and others.
