I often see that websites rank with two or sometimes even three pages for some keywords.

However, usually these are long tail keywords which are just not targeted a lot.

In the past years I rarely saw this happening for the tough keywords. If so it was a temporary phenomenon so after a couple of days it went back to normal and even the highest authoritative sites had only one champion ranking.

What is weird now that for my main keyword which is really really very very competitive (targeted by 500+ sites and a lot of marketers) there are four sites in the top20 which have each two pages each ranking. This situation is in place now since May, so for almost three months now.

Does anybody else observe this and can somehow explain what is going on?

Hard to say, could be hidden PBN of course. Could be some massively powerful 301s. But threads like this are what I think of when people on these forums like to say "blackhat is dead."

For the 1000 times, Google ranks pages not domains.

Number of indexed page increases the strength of domain which increases the strength of all pages. However, Backlinks are the strongest signal in SEO.

So, if you have enough number of backlinks, you can rank 3 pages website although you would need very long article ( to cover the whole keyword ) and good traffic signal to take reach number 1 position.

Is it enough to have short articles but of high quality?

No, according to study on top 10 pages ranking for over 2 Million keywords, the average length of articles was 1800 - 2600 words. The length of article matters a lot.
