I have a website that is approx 8 years old and has been ranking well for a number of years.
Lately my rankings have dropped down to mid to lower second pages

Looking for some help to improve my rankings again.
Should I start with an audit? content audit? more links?
etc

Plz help

did you anything that could cause the drop or it just happened suddenly ?

hello sir
Yes bro, best to start with full audit. Check content also if it's old or outdated. Some fresh backlinks can help too. Hope u recover ranking soon!
Best of luck!

Start with a full audit — check for outdated pages, broken links, thin content, and Core Web Vitals. Then update top pages and build fresh authority links. Small tweaks can bring big gains.

Yes, definitely start with a full site audit. Check for outdated content, broken links, slow page speed, or indexing issues. Do a content refresh and update old posts. Also analyze backlink quality - lost or toxic links can hurt. A mix of technical fixes, better content, and new high-quality links usually helps recover rankings.

Yes, start with a full audit:

Technical audit (speed, errors, indexing)

Content audit (update, merge, or remove weak pages)

Backlink audit (lost links or spammy ones)

Then:

Refresh top content

Add internal links

Build high-quality backlinks

Monitor GSC & rankings weekly

Store audit will be okay so you will actually know what to work on after that

As already correctly mentioned, you need an audit.

If you're using WordPress, check for all updates and make sure everything is working properly. Hacks and SEO exploitation are very common and can slowly kill the site.

I’d 100% start with a full site + content audit check for outdated pages, thin content, and technical issues. Sometimes refreshing old content + improving internal links gives a quick boost. New links help, but fix the foundation first!

Yes, start with a full audit. Check technical issues first, then review your content. Make sure it's still relevant, updated, and matches current search intent. Look at your competitors on page one. What are they doing better? Better structure, fresher content, stronger backlinks?

Once the audit’s done, update weak pages, add new content to cover gaps, and refresh your link profile with relevant, high-quality links. Rankings usually drop for a mix of reasons, not just one.

Indeed, after eight years, an SEO decline is often a symptom rather than a verdict. Before delving into a content audit to eliminate or update underperforming sites, I would begin with a thorough site assessment (technical + content). Additionally, keep an eye out for algo upgrades and spy on rivals to see if they're doing something illegal. Although links are still important, be sure you're not depending on out-of-date link sources. Clean tech combined with clever linkages and fresh, optimized content equals a resurgence.

Yes, definitely start with a full audit. If your site has been ranking well for years and suddenly drops, it's usually a mix of weaker signals, outdated content, loss of topical authority, aging UX, or declining behavioral signals. Also check recent Core Updates and compare your SEO profile (dwell time, return visits, CTR, etc.). Sometimes, a spike in real user signals (like mobile traffic or natural interactions) can help trigger recovery. But first, focus on improving perceived content quality and aligning with search intent.

I would not jump the gun making heavy changes because of a drop.

the questions remain:

Have you made any recent changes?
Is there a reason you suffered a penalty?
Have you added any recent SEO?

Also lots of good advice above. I remember when I ranked page one on a keyword and i could not figure it out why i droped to page 3-4 for months, it turns out ONE competitor entered the market with a massive PBN and parasite SEO scheme
