Old SEO techniques sometimes works better nowadays for me after the Google update. Most of the old techniques were purely ban by Google.
For Ex: low-quality website can easily get ranked in Top results (With the help of back-links) on 2008 but not now!
It is useful to know the ancient strategies & its basics. Once you familiar with the basics you might be strong in the core of SEO. But being in the discussions forums are much useful than reading the books.

Why don't you just spend some time around the forums? There are golden threads that explain this process IN-DEPTH
Well... if the book gives you a better sense of security then by all means just go ahead and buy it, but I can assure you there is nothing in those books that you won't find around the forum.
