If you have a site around 6 months old with a few hundred diverse backlinks to it targeting a certain main keyword with a video, a twitter etc how difficult do you think it would be to completely switch gears and target a different main keyword?

I shot myself in the foot on this one. I didn't have a clue about anything when I started this site. The keyword is all wrong and I'm thinking about just scraping the whole project.

One thing to consider is whether or not current content is relevant for your new main keyword. If you are planning to change also the content to match the new keyword then I would dump the site and start new one with new domain as you would anyway loose rankings. I think that value of your current backlinks in future would be authority and PR even the anchors doesn't have new main keyword.

So if you need to modify content/structure a lot I would go with new domain and redirect old one in order to keep the link juice. If you can still use the same content then just start backlinking with new keyword and old backlinks will serve as link diversity source.

Thanks for the response. I think I could get away with using a new keyword same content for the most part but I've sunk more money into it than I would've liked to I think I'm going to scrap it. What a waste.
