website idea i have .. whatdya think?

i just dabble w/ html on dreamweaver, i sort of know java ... im not real experienced but i can figure stuff out, but not much website experience

it can work but to save yourself some time your probably best of going down the root of a CMS so the bars can pay and update info and banners themselves, will save you time in the long run so as you concentrate on other things and $20 is way too cheap... a quarter page advert in a free local paper which isnt exactly targeted can be $400/week so make it worth your while - getting it ranked and visited by the right traffic ie the punters should be among your priorities too

integrate affiliate banners too and google ads to generate even more income...

take a look at joomla and in particular some of the template sites like bestofjoomla.com they have ready made templates that you can customize to suit your needs

Try something like happy-hour.com - so that locals won't need to drive around to find the happy hour offers, special bargains etc. You need to go for a brandable domain name and do some local publicity and it will pay off.

I like the idea too. I would suggest maybe directing it towards the ladies with posted ladies night specials.

Women are more prone to look it up than dudes who will just grab his keys a and a friend and head out to a bar that is going to charge him full price everyday day anyway.

I've been working on an idea very similar to this, still got a long way to go programming wise.

You just gave me an idea of other niches I can tap into once I get this idea up and running.

start them off cheap.

as you get traffic. raise the prices. make sure they know that from the beginning.
and compare the website ad to a billboard banner or newspaper ad.
in terms of views/cost.
say it costs extra to email you whole list. (which you only do once a week) "deal of the week" in which you send them info on the best party this week.
you also have bar of the week. which is the featured bar.
and also drink of the week.
get them into a competition, milk the bars for all their cash.
if you expand this enough no reason why you cant get to 2500 a week if you expand yourself.
but to start aim for 1000.

then go for sub domains like craigslist.
and get every city in america. (just showing you how far you can take this)

word .. i was shooting for like 1k a month for now ... i'm going to look into joomla

i definatlely want to give bars access for their own pages.

what can i do to start off? i have no problem promoting the site, but i need to have bars on there, so should i just ask them if they want to be on there for $20 a month .. or add them up there for free?

also, the domain name i've been thining of for a while ... i was thinking something like "towns name"-bars.com ... or "townsname"pubs ... short and sweet plust would prolly rank well

why not do a wordpress mu install, run the specials/ad site as the main, and then sell sub sites to individual bars. That way you can get them on advertising on the main site and on the hosting every month.
you could start it off by giving away a few freebies in return for being able to put those table tents with info on your site there. Initially, you site basically just needs to be a calendar but then you could expand it to having photos from the night before and even a "social" aspect with user comments.
I tried this in my town, but people here don't get it..

you mean something like this ?

meetmeinto.com its like a social network site, but local bars/clubs advertise (for toronto)

could always go a different route and go dot mobi or even iphone app....

fyi i developed the first recognized dot mobi ready joomla site - so it can be still done using joomla, will just need some customization

CLTnightlife.com does that in my area. No idea how much money they make but I'm sure it's a shit load.

nah dont put bars or pubs in your domain..
keep it general.
cause once u hit it off with bars.
u start talking to restaurants! tell them the success of the bar directory and the effect your website has on the advertised bars.
and tell them to get in early before they regret the decision in 2 months time!
with the number of restaurants in a city.
your set for 5000 a week.
of course this would be a year from now, maybe longer.
and get 2 employees. one to manage site. 1 to manage lister relations.
and you clear 10-15k a month depending on what you pay them. on autopilot.

whatever you do.
if you reach a big milestone.
take a month off to think. itll be hard to do but the ideas you will get will be priceless

p.s. ukescuba's sig seems appropriate for your needs :p

5k a week would be ridiculous. I like the nightlife idea joomla looks cool...I kind of have an idea of the format I want..so if anyone is real experienced It would be great to discuss creating a site

well i just found out there is a site that is doing something very similar to what i wnat to do.. however its a bigger site and does the same thing for each area ... my site would be more personal and i think would have a better feel to it ... should i still go for it? its competition .. but im convinced i can do better, they dont advertise or anything via search or anything else

Never be afraid of competition.

Burger King isn't afraid of McD'S, Sears wasn't afraid of Wards, Pepsi isn't afraid of Coke. Each appeals to a different market in a different way.

Just because there's competition doesn't mean they're doing anything with their site. There are millions of orphaned sites on the Internet.

If you think you have a better idea and you're willing to really develop it (meaning get out there and talk to owners in person) then go for it. If you just want to build a site and hope people find it then it is probably a good idea to find another project.

Go for it, if you could have a page where locals could punch in their zip code and it would show you the closest bars, the bars would be all over this.

ok i have this idea for a website i would create, it has to deal with local bars, in my area there are not many resources to find specials or antyhing like that, so i would create one..

i figure i'd make a site, have it be useful, advertise the shit out of it, and hopefully get bar owners to pay me monthly to be on my site..

to start out i figure i'd shoot for as many bars as i can possibly get at like $20 a month, if i got 20 .. that would be 400 a month. now obviously i'd want to expand.

but i have a problem of counting my chickens, so right now i think this is an awesome idea and something i couldn't lose with, but i'm wondering if anyone has ever done anything similar, and if you can give me some advice or input on the idea ... thanx yallz
Why don't you just take action and test it and see if it works. Good luck with this and let us know how you do.

add a forum so your visitors have somewhere to discuss the night life.

You also want to have a good sales pitch to pitch to the bars.. not just some shitty "hey wanna be on my site for 20 bucks?!" ... a solid pitch that will show the owner the features and benefits of joining the site and why the site is a good idea for them and how it will help them MAKE money.

i'm wondering .. this is a long shot, but, is there any source codes for a site like facebook? if i could set up the site almost like a facebook for bars i think it would be a good set up

Check the downloads section, otherwise - search google for "facebook clone" (torrent if you want too). I know they're plenty of them :)
