website idea i have .. whatdya think?

ok i have this idea for a website i would create, it has to deal with local bars, in my area there are not many resources to find specials or antyhing like that, so i would create one..

i figure i'd make a site, have it be useful, advertise the shit out of it, and hopefully get bar owners to pay me monthly to be on my site..

to start out i figure i'd shoot for as many bars as i can possibly get at like $20 a month, if i got 20 .. that would be 400 a month. now obviously i'd want to expand.

but i have a problem of counting my chickens, so right now i think this is an awesome idea and something i couldn't lose with, but i'm wondering if anyone has ever done anything similar, and if you can give me some advice or input on the idea ... thanx yallz

i like the idea. Of course it all depends on how much advertising you can get out there and what sort of local traffic you can generate.
 
Your idea is still in the development stage as far as i can tell because you understand what your saying, but it doesnt make sense to anyone that doesnt have the knowladge inside of your head lol.

You didnt really say what your website would be.
 
well i dont want it to get jacked by anyone ...

basically i'm looking at it like this ... right now a ton of local bars are advertising on the radio and in the newspaper .. there is no place really for them to advertise on the internet ...

now i just turned 21 and i'm an internet addict, so when i can't go online and see whats going down in my part of town tonight ... i get annoyed.

so my site would be a place that ppl would visit before they go out at nite to see what specials bars are having and where.

i figure that even if a bar didn't really need the advertisement ... why wouldnt they do it anyway? so ultimately the idea is to create a website and eventually have it known by every local person as the place to go to check out specials that bars are having for the nite/weekend/month
 
My friend did somethin similar with local hotels once; just creating a pretty standard directory, but they'd have to pay for listing...good cash is your site's ranked well.
 
Why stick to local (to you) only? Create an entire directory with the aim of adding every single area/town..expand your reach :)
 
There's tons of websites like that which put them in for free so not sure if it would work.

I think he's saying he wants to run a review site of local bars around his area and make the bars pay him to get advertised.

This method is actually on the forum already. You need to get to the first page of Google (or at least in front of the bars own websites) before this will work.

Believe it or not, it still can; especially if you starting putting a targeted email list together...
 
well heres the deal ... no bars in my area have website, the only place ppl can see specials is if they drive by the bars or get this special paper that we have.

i woudln't be a review site, i would just be a site that maybe has pictures of the bars, where they are, the entertainment, food & drink specials .. then have a featured listing..

as far as competition, the only competition i have is like yahoo, yelp, and yellow pages, which are all directories, which is what i don't want to be

i want to be more like a site that embraces nitelife in the area, and eventually like takes pics of ppl when theyre out so they visit the site

edit: i'd also publicise it a lot ... give out t shirts, advertise on the radio, go to bars and shit
 
What you should is make deals with all the bars and nightclubs so that people can sign up on your site and then receive discount when they go to the places you have at your website.

right ... exactly what i was thinking, i could compile an email list, and send out emails paid for my bars to whomever ... also if i got enough traffic i'd have a featured bar on the first page which would cost more .. but would drive them more business

plus more ideas .. i just can't list them all now
 
if your town has an alternative weekly paper or a weekend paper, perhaps you can get a sense of your target audience/competition, how much they pay for ads. what can you add in terms of interactive features, like can you give each bar its own page or something or affiliate their merchandise?
 
i was going to give each bar its own page most likely ... i'm going to see the rates on most papers ..

i want to make the site very useful tho, i was thinking of having it formatted kind of like facebook, i was wondering what the best code to use was to do it ..

i definately want to have users that can log in, and then maybe an account for bar owners to update their stuff
 
Go for it, it seems like they really want ads...or you could just buy a domain for every bar and charge them more with "maintenance" fees etc :) If you need a designer, PM me.
 
Biggest problem is the chicken/egg dilemma: bars would want to know what kind of traffic you're seeing before they'd ever shell out a penny, and no one's going to spread word of mouth info about a site that has not actually reviewed anything yet because no bars have paid them to do so.

You might want to consider reviewing the bars then offering paid spots for the specials to show up on the front page.
 
well i'm not gunna review bars ... i'm just displayin them ... but i thought about like putting a couple bars on there for free first to get traffic
 
what software are you using? you can have users leave reviews. any business loves a way to get information on what their customers think

i dont know what to use ... if someone could guide me on what software to build the site w/ that would be awesome...

i definately want to have usernames on the site, customer reviews would be awesome, and i even think i'd like a thumbs up/down type of thing, and maybe even a popularity scale.. sort of how imdb does it
