Byethost is the best free hosting I've used. Only problem was that they have an automated spam detection. It picked up my account as a spam one and they disabled it whie inspecting it. I opened a ticket and got a reply pretty quick and they reenabled my account.

    It depends on your needs.

If I don't intend to do any back-end (PHP) coding, I stick with tumblr as you can easily modify the whole front-end (including any javascript scripts) to your needs. You can also put affiliate links, adsense or anything you want there.

For back-end stuff I'd also vote for byethost.
