DMCA may help, but you need a lot of time looking for who have copied from you, then time for claims
A competitor had been keeping scraping my content and images.
After some DMCAs they started to attack us with NEGATIVE SEO (mountings of casino, slot backlinks)
Karma could have been a BIG BITCH.

Agreed.
Let us be realistic. There is literally nothing that can protect your content from being copied / stolen.
At the most you can harden the path of the thief by using some plugins, etc. so some newbies will find it difficult to copy it. But the pros will anyways grab your content by whatever means. So relax and focus on other essential aspects of internet marketing.
