Hey BHW so I want to start providing SEO services for local offline businesses and I was wondering if I should have a website dedicated to information about what I do and stuff of that nature. I wanted to start relatively soon so I don't think I would really have time to rank before I actually got started. Would a simple wordpress website be enough? What are your thoughts?!

Yes, that will be a good idea, Buyers will look your rankings, authority, PR, etc. etc.. before ordering. Your thinking at this stage is right one :).. You can update fresh unique articles about your niche, and that should be something informative for SE users. So I guess, any simple word press theme is more enough.. then start building some High PR backlinks, niche blog posts, blog comments, directory sub, etc.. So your website will get some authority and possibly increase in PR on next updates which helps you better start while promoting SEO service.

    Thanks,
    Bart

Yes, having a website would be a great idea. Make sure to make it attractive and try your SEO services on your own site first and rank it in the search engines. It would help you in getting more traffic and eventually more clients.

It would be a good idea to at least have a website. If you don't rank it yet, just say you're trying to get some clients and gain traction by word-of-mouth first or something. You can also use the fact that it can take a while to rank!

You need a site to compete in the SEO industry. When I look for services I always look for the site and the PR rank.

Sorry but you don't need a website to compete in the SEO industry, you need to get your clients results. My seo companies "website" has been in "maintenance mode" since July of 2011. Just getting a sole proprietor business registered is good so they can cut checks to your business name and not your personal name. Also I use my .com email where my maintenance mode website is hosted to give that more professional vibe :) I've never had a single client care that I don't have a website, I'm telling you if you get results that's all they care about.

Its actually a little more complicated than that. Most customers who hear of you from another satisfied customer will not care if you have a site, the results you have gotten for others is all they want to know about you. Others will want you to have a site because this gives you some credibility as a real business, and some people will look to see if your site is ranking before they will think you have good SEO skills. Ranking an SEO site is a bitch in a competitive market.

ANY business will benefit from a website.

Not putting up a website for your web services business is foolish.

Thanks everyone for the replied. A lot of you brought up that I can't compete in the SEO industry without having a website, but what if there isn't really any competition? I live north of Seattle and it seems that there isn't any serious agencies/firms/whatever you want to call it out here. Now this seems to be the case for a lot of the surrounding cities. I think I might just have to actually go out and network with people to get some business going + 7878's method of mailing them. Spread some knowledge to people about what seo is and how it can benefit them.

We never had a website in the beginning - but just put one up as more of a landing page type site... recently.

People only cared about results really - but as they recommended us those people then looked for a Site first - so in the end we got one.

Like most people said and in our case - at some point you should have one - but starting out it's up to you.

You can install wordpress with a great looking pro theme in 30 minutes at most, and add some content. There is no excuse to start your seo business without a website, regardless of whether it will rank or not - it only has to rank for it's own brand name anyway, which is very simple.

Arsis is right. Just throw up a lander with a professional company url and use a company email address. Focus on the benefits and revenue you will generate for them

You definitely do not need a website to sell Internet Marketing services...especially SEO.

If you want to sell SEO, then focus on your potential clients and your current clients. Getting to know your potential clients, find out thier exact needs and explain to them the strategies required to full fill those needs is way more important than a website. For your current clients, make sure you getting them results and you are so talking to them on a regular basis so that you are able to keep them happy as well as possibly getting referrals from them.

No company NEEDS a website to sell their services but business can utilize a website to capture the potential customers that are on the Internet.
