As of my experience you need to do tier2 web2.0 and keep updating content. Need to engage the website and get more quality backlinks.

@jeanseb05 - treat these tumblr's as your money site. meaning build very relevant web 2.0's to them, with relevant anchor keywords. you will see benefits rolled up to your money site
also - you do know that you only links in description section of tumblr makes it to your money site and not links mentioned in the posts?

What ? We can't do contextual link with Tumblr? I can't do a post and put a Anchor link to my money site in it ?

It is almost useless imho. I had hundreds of expired tumblrs... just stopped using them cause of inefficiency.
Also they are hard af to index nowadays.
