Web Hosting TTFB

Hi there,

recently I've been looking for a new web host to host a new USA website.
I've finally taken Hostwinds as I've seen good reviews (even here on BHW) and from their web page they seemed to really care about performance.

So I've setup everything and...



I almost fell from my chair !
I've optimized everything on my wordpress speed, but the TTFB is ruining everything !
On GT Metrix : Web page fully loaded = 2,4s, TTFB = 1,5s ...

Even Google PageSpeed Insights I got an almost perfect grade ... only BIG RED ERROR is TTFB too high.

I've contacted Hostwinds about this (I'm on their ultimate business plan...), they said everything is optimized on their end and they cannot help me.


That's unacceptable for me to have that much latency. Ok it's not a dedicated server performance, but still. Between 2s and 50 ms there's a HUGE gap.

I'm still on their 60-day money back guarantee so I'm thinking about asking a refund, just waiting to find a better alternative



Question : Is that the same thing on every shared host ? If yes, do you have any dedicated server/VPS to recommend in the US ?


Here in Europe I have a dedicated server for 20e/month, unable to find similar thing in the US. Should be at least 4GB RAM IMO.

Get a 5$/month Vultr server, dude!

There are still several factors that go into that. Where is the server located where are you doing your test from. with GT Metrix the default server location they test from is canada that I have seen. Using this location yes there is going to be a slowness in the site. But if you have a regular business website. Most clients are not even going to notice that difference.

Have you tried DigitalOcean

2 seconds first byte time is huge! That being said, it could be a problem with how the web server is setup, too. For example, did you check how much free RAM you have when the server is running? Also, does the server have ssd? What kind of server are you running?

Have you used them personally? How is your first byte time?
