Are web directories worth the effort? Surely the guys at google have figured out that people are using them to boost rankings so why would having your site listed on 100 web directories have any effect?

It's like asking, social bookmarks worth the effort? It's part of the whole link building system. You can't ignore these if you want to go big, buddy!

    Hey, thanks for the reply.

So are you saying that even though the links are recognized as being low-quality, having them as part of your backlink system improves your backlink score?

It's hard to say for sure one way or the other...one thing you can do is check a few of the sites listed on a web directory you are thinking of submitting to and checking their rankings and quality. (High rankings and high quality...the directory is probably worth your time!)

Link building isnt a wait and see type game, you need a complete strategy to implement right from the beginning

That's an interesting perspective, so how does one come up with a strategy that will work?

Check out Matthew Woodwards sig link or just use G and do a search for his site using his name. Start with the tierd link building videos. I like to follow guys that I have found here that have made great posts
Like Scritty, Madoctopus, Matt Borden, have learned a ton from them and will continue to learn from others here as well, no doubt about that. By the way, that was a good follow up question, all the best.

They do have a positive effect. But I'm not talking about 100 links at shit directories. Best of the Web, Joe Ant, etc. are all rock solid. If you are looking at free directories, expect the same results as your out of pocket costs.
