Hello! :)

So I'm still practicing creating websites now but I need to ask you some quesitons about selling themes. I'm not quite sure exactly what should be the best website to sell them. I considered using codester or maybe some free digital product marketplace. I'd be glad if you give me any advice on that.(what's the best free option)

I often check different posts of people who are searching for templates and I wanted to know if using my paypal to accept payments is fine or not. My paypal isn't verified yet (I also have no more than 5$) and I was wondering if the buyer can do something if they don't like the template. I mean can they somehow complain to paypal and get me in trouble?

I also consider selling custom themes after I have enough skills on some freelancing website like fiverr or people per hour. Do you think I could make income while working in this way?

Some additional info: I failed university and I'm living with my parents. I'm learning web development by myself. I'm trying to collect enough money so that I can move out in the next months.

People could do a charge back if they are unhappy meaning you'll end up with a negative balance.

May you tell me exactly what happens when you have a negative balance? I mean should I add money so that I can remove it?

Yes you need money in the account to clear that off.
 
Paypal will usually side with the buyer (so the person you sold the template to will usually get their way in a dispute.)
The situation tends to be worse with digital products (such as a theme, ebook, video course, etc...)

The buyer could start a dispute with Paypal, and if they win, then they will get their refund.
The buyer could also issue a chargeback with their bank, in which case the charge to their bank account\credit card would be reversed, and then Paypal would likely pass this on and reverse whatever funds you made from that sale.

So to clarify:
1) Your account has $0.00
2) Customer buys your theme for $20.00. Your account has now $20.00 (minus paypal fees, but lets ignore that)
3) Customer decides they don't like the item or they just want to get the item for free, and either issues a chargeback or dispute with paypal and wins.
4) Your account is now $0.00 again because Paypal removed -$20.00 from your balance.

IF you had a $0.00 balance when the chargeback came, I believe your balance would then be MINUS $20.00 and you would owe Paypal $20 and have to pay it off.


Refunds and chargebacks are a reality of sales unfortunately. Your best bet is to create quality products that people love, and try to sell to an audience that isn't known to be scammy\cheap (easier said than done.)

Paypal tends to side with the buyer. I hear Stripe tends to side with the buyer now too. eBay also.
Payment processors like 2Checkout for example, IIRC have a fee like $20 for each chargeback ON TOP of the chargeback itself (nice way to go broke if you have a niche with a high chargeback rate.)


You don't need to grind away at Fiverr to start making themes -- but I guess it's a good way to gain practice coding while also making a bit of side cash.

Regarding your selling templates, there are theme marketplace sites like ThemeForest that increase the exposure to the themes you make (give you traffic), but also take a nice chunk of commission for that privilege.
Same deal goes here -- make quality shit that people love and want to use, and they WILL gladly pay for them.

So you're telling me that I should first get some money (for example 50$) before spending and in this case I won't have negative balance if something in this way happens.

You don't need to have money in there to start -- you just have to be careful if you sell stuff (say you make $20) and then you SPEND that $20 out from your account, then your balance is $0.00 and the problem arises at that point _IF_ now all of a sudden that buyer that you made the $20 from and spent, decides to chargeback, and there is no money in your account. Then you owe paypal $20. Does that make sense?

So if you sold say 5 templates for $20 this week lets say. You have $100 in your account. If only one person decides to chargeback, then you have $100 - $20, or $80 left in your account. Everything is safe and good.

In another case -- IF you spent $80 of the $100 you made, then your account only has $20 left. Now that one person issues a chargeback, and you are still OK, cause your account has the $20 to subtract from. Your balance would then be $0.00

HOWEVER, if you made $100, then spent all $100, and now a buyer issues a chargeback -- your account has no money to subtract from, so you'd go into the negative balance, and owe $20 to paypal.

Hopefully that makes sense :)

From what I could tell, Paypal.me is just a redirect service that provides you with some shortlink for people to pay you. The service itself is identical to Paypal.com -- everything is processed by the same servers, same accounts, etc... So yes, absolutely what I said earlier definitely applies here as well.
