Hi Folks,

I am interested in designing a website where people can post content ( the file format can be anything.), the content can only be accessed by people who have registered. Now please dont be mis-guided that I want to create something like RapidShare. What I mean is that people can search, and download the posted content.

My questions are:
- How much will such design cost?
- Should I be able to do it by my self using any open source CMS?

Thanks for your answer. I have time but Open-Source CMS are going to be that flexible? I mean if I want to add some new features I can do? Additionally can you name a few good CMS which can be used to make a site for community or content posting as I mentioned above?
 
Are you asking for something like Sharepoint? If so maybe check out Alfresco or Liferay. No personal experience with either but they were the first to pop up with I googled "free open source Sharepoint"
 
Web design cost should vary as per your requirement. If you feel that you can do then do it yourself. But if you are not able to do this then outsource it to someone who is able to do this else then a choose a best web design company which are able to do this.:hello::hello::6:

Any OpenSource CMS will do?

You can do practically anything you can imagine in Drupal (however the learning curve is high). You can probably do what you want in Joomla or Wordpress as well. Find a torrent site that has books and videos on the CMS of your choice and that will give you some indication of how hard it will be for you to learn it. In my personal opinion it is a good idea to know PHP, no matter what CMS you decide to use.

If you learn Drupal and master it; you can make excellent money as a freelancer :)

Yesterday installed acquia drupal on my Pc. I watched video tutorials from YouTube and tried that on the site. I totally agree with you it's been justa day and I feel that this may work in my project.

However I find it difficult to understand. I saw some websites and they looked totally different than any themes I can find. I have a small question that, should I use pages module to override default themes or make my own. I want my first page to look different no sidebars nothing. Still I thick I need to plan it properly. Btw if you come across any good resource tell me.

I won't really recommend you drupal due to restrictions on design & stuff.

Open source CMS is the best as you are open to do anything. You could add any feature you want if you are a good programmer or if you have a good programmer in your team.

Do checkout internet if there are scripts like what you want, would save you some time.

I just wanted to say that Drupal is an open source CMS and there are no restrictions on designs. I like to use the Zen theme and modify it (it is a theme designed to be modified), however making a theme from scratch is fairly simple. http://drupalize.me/ and http://buildamodule.com/ are excellent resources (once again check torrent sites for the videos) and lastly the Drupal site itself has an excellent forum to get almost any question answered. Drupal is difficult to learn, however you can reap great rewards if you master it (and for the record I haven't mastered it yet) :)

I have started playing with drupal it seems fairly easy because all the hard work is done by modules so that we don't need to do much. Only thing I find difficult is the look or appearance, because to make it look like I want. It would require huge makeover. For example I need cool background for the pankes. I need lines between different posts features in news look professional. Also graphics too.

I will look the resources that you share, thanks a lot :).
