I'm a software engineer with experience in web and mobile development. I'm working on getting away from a day job. What route/method would you all take with a similar skill-set?

Go the freelancer way.
Create a profile on UpWork with a nice resume, picture and a few aced online tests. Then to make it even better, hire yourself for a few fixed price projects and give yourself stellar reviews. Look for open jobs and apply. Don't be afraid to charge a lot, it will make you look more professional, especially if you have completed jobs at that price with a nice review (wink-wink).
Additionally, start building a portfolio of projects that would be cool and useful and put a hire me link on them. You can build a small useful web tool for people on this forum and if it's useful, they will surely make it popular and sooner or later it's bound to start bringing you jobs.
I'm sorry if you advice is generic and obvious, but I think this approach works, just be persistent while you're building up your name/account and sooner or later you'll be making some serious money (if your skills justify that of course).

Mate, You are a software engineer with experience in web and mobile development!! Software development, web development and mobile development all of these are highly demandable job in all freelancing sites. You can create an account in upwork or freelancer.com or other related site. Believe you'll get mostly demandable job. I saw a software developer's rich profile in upwork. His demand is $30 per hour! and still he is working under a company and already he made $40000 under a single contact!!!
Mate, If you want then you can follow these way. I also have few knowledge about web development, still working in three freelancing sites and earning a better amount per month.
