Do you have experience in any programming languages? Are you wanting to do desktop or web programming? PHP for web and .NET for desktop would be my suggestions. If you just want to automate a few things, hire someone, you'll save a lot of time.

I would initially start making some windows based ubot's to just get the jist of what it is like to make programs and then start on with learning a language.

php for web automation is not the best option, you are very limited to what you can automated, you will better with .net or autoit for small bots

Just pick one language and stick with it to get some general programming experience.
Once you reached the limits of that language, you can simply adopt your know how to another language.

Going to throw in my vote for a .Net language, specifically C#. You can use it for web stuff (Asp) or local windows apps, so it's pretty powerful. In my experience Python just isn't as useful or as widely used. But hey, I'm biased as a .Net developer ;)
