No, it is not necessary for your Web 2.0 to rank in Google. They need to be indexed in Google and that's it. The article topics should be loosely based on the broad niche of your backlinked website as you need to make the anchor text and backlink look organic in the content.

The content in the web 2.0s should be contextual and related to the content on your money site. You can write random stuff but that won't have the same effect as the contextual content. Also those web 2.0s don't need to rank. Just make sure that they get indexed by the search engines.

not necessary to rank your web 2.0 but it they ranks then it will help to get traffic to your website and pass juice to your site
