I'm not an expert when it comes to htaccess in anyway so don't ask me why or how but for some of my hostings I have had to add
Options +FollowSymLinks
at the top of the file to get them to work while on others it have been causing problems and not worked when I have had it there.
Don't know if that solves your problem...
