Hey everyone, I have built up a city-based Instagram account (think "I Love Chicago" or any account that focuses on posting content from a specific city. We're in Ohio). We've gotten popular and have started to monetize through sponsored posts/shout outs from local brands, and even in retail through these posters we made (selling via Etsy).

I'm struggling to figure out what we can do to make more money with this, though. The posters were moderately successful, and the city I'm in has a huge sense of pride so Ohio-themed items have sold well in general, but everyone and their brother is also making Ohio-themed items so the marketplace is getting very crowded and each new item I see gets cornier and cornier. This makes me a little hesitant to make shirts, stickers, etc. (Also, the up-front costs would be tough since I'm in a tough spot financially)

My friend and I have discussed doing sponsored events where we could potentially take a cut of bar sales for organizing and promoting an event (which we do for our day job) but nothing has come to fruition yet.

I'm not interested in going the "FREE IPADS!" or paid offers in the link in bio route, as we've actually created a brand that is picking up traction. I wouldn't want to cheapen the brand like that.

What are some different ideas to help make money from this?

Maybe you could hook up with some local tour/tourism companies (places that give tours, museums, etc) to do sponsored posts to gain attraction to their services. Another idea in terms of apparel would be to go a more modern route, something more like street wear than straight touristy cheeseball stuff.

Look into local concerts as well. Maybe you can get paid to advertise / sell tickets for them?

In one word --> Advertise local shops/restaurants
Tell them your story and ask if they would be interested in getting advertised on your page. Most of the local shops/hotels/restaurants will be more than happy to get shout/review from you in return of free food, drinks, etc. Be sure take your photographer friend with you take pictures. :D

If I may ask, what's your follower count right now?

Best of luck

Get a tshirt made that says something like "it's a Chicago thing" and put it on teespring

Use Instaprints and Prinstagram to create a digital photo service for clients who want to buy a hard copy of one of your photos. All you do is upload the Instagram photo into the site's software, select a printing option (size of the photo, and the material the image is to be printed on, like business cards, posters, or calendars), and then ask the site to ship to your client!

I would try to make deals with some local (offline) businesses like restaurants, cafes etc. You bring them customer who will consume their products and you will get money for promo postings. You will do promo posts for them wiht a coupon code to drive more people to the local venues. Win win win for all parties involved :)

You should open a website and link back to your Instagram account. Buy some real instagram likes per each post and make sure you have the hashtag of your local city in your description. You should then start trending for that city hashtag and youll get more organic traffic.

Right now we're just over 13k followers, and are growing at about ~200-400/week.

Thank you all for the suggestions. It sounds like sticking with promoted posts and working with small businesses is the most natural way to go!

thats exactly what i have been doing.
i've tried teespring a couple times without luck.
i've surveyed for an (free) event idea, and got 50 commenting 'yes' out of my 13k followers.
i think it can probably work eventually, but it takes a lot of work.
