Was it because of reddit?

Hey peoples, the other day I wrote an article and thought a subreddit on reddit would like to see it so I shared it there and got about 500 visitors to my site as a result. I have Jetpack activated and in the search terms it says about 15 people have found my site with a certain keyword string.

I typed it in and bang! I'm ranked 5th. Then I typed it in how it should be written and I'm second! I've never been on the first page before so I was rapt. Now the thing is, my site is about something entirely unrelated to the subject matter. I just wrote a sort of POV on a different topic (which is probably extremely popular by now) and my page was indexed in 2 hours and on the first page on the same day.

Did the traffic from reddit have this effect or is it just an extremely lucky coincidence? Have any of you experienced this?

This is my first thread about reddit (besides committing an infraction about selling an account) so... OK :)

But yeah, reddit's awesome as a real user, I don't know how it would work for pure marketing purposes.

Very very hard, but possible.
The best places to game are the default subreddits, even if you dont leave /r/subreddit/new with the post it will give a big amount of boost to the post. Only drawback to Reddit is that it actually has to be good content if you try to sneak in some advertising.

What worked for me was using tshirts, mugs etc.
Post "funny" shirt to /r/funny, and ask in the thread where to buy such a shirt (only when the post is rising do this) and wait around 40 minutes and answer it with a link to your own dropshipping shop. You can also jump in at other posts and quickly make the shirt with one of those dropshipping sites.

edit:
Also mentionable places for easy sales are all the fansubs like /r/drwho /r/got /r/mlp they buy almost everything if it looks good.
