Warning For All You Email List Marketers.

We will always find a way to find a suitable solution to these kind of developments.

Oh well im moving into a diff form of email marketing anyways that converts way better.

GL to you all!

It's not going to kill email marketing. Just think of it as helpful really. If we can figure out what throws up the flag to be marked as a promotion and make a change in your email marketing template to circumvent the flag and end up in the general mailbox your gold. Your already ahead of 99% of the other crap emails that the user is receiving

I hope people whos subscribed for any newsletters would figure this out and will be checking the "promotion" tab themselfs like the primary tab.
But it can take some time because it's new habbit.

Hmmm, I see the need for an opt-in form rotator script...

i.e. Have a site, place opt-in form code to this effect:

Collect Name and Email, parse email, if contains "gmail", "googlemail", send subscribe request to AR "a", else send subscribe request to AR "b".

AR "b" continues to be the "established" list managers, such as Aweber, Mailchimp, etc, AR "a" is a separate list manager you set up for subscribers using Gmail, where you have worked your way around this filter.

Should be easy enough...

As I pointed out yesterday, the promotions tab has emails with a particular header, it should be obvious to anybody who knows mail, and indulging in uninformed speculation is superfluous. The more nefarious tab is the "updates" tab which is based on a certain header alignment.

Host your own auto responder on your website and have you talk to your list that way. That way its not filtered and put into ``promotions``
F&%$

Spot on!! Thank you for contributing a powerful tip. For those of us with many sites, this sounds like a winning method. Thanks twice.

The problem is this isn't scalable in any useful way. If it weren't for the whitelisted servers nobody would use third party services like this anyway.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry *too much* about all this. Since it's affecting all the opt-in stuff, it's going to be something users are going to have to check anyway.

Not seeing this on any of my gmail accounts yet but this would hurt a lot if they implemented these changes across the board.

Anyone else noticing it in their gmail accounts?

I have noticed it, and yes it will certainly affect the promotional emails, not only in the sense that due to the filtration, people will more likely to delete the emails in promotions by just watching the subject and sender, but also as they have filtered unwanted stuff, Un-subscriptions and spam hits are going to increase as well.

But for those who have opt in email subscribers and sending permission based email messages taking care of targeted customer's interest, they are going to get benefit from this filtration. If your promotion has something for the target audience, recipient will keep it save in promotion's tab until the recipient open it.

Happened on all my emails... mailchimp already published a detailed case study and their conclusion was that the opening rate already started to go down (and the tabbed feature is still in beta... imagine what will happen when it will go full live)

http://blog.mailchimp.com/how-gmails-new-inbox-is-affecting-open-rates/

They tried to circumvent it, but it will not be as easy as changing the unsubscribe wording i am afraid...

this is serious stuff in my opinion, although i am not very involved in email marketing.. something to worry about

Reactions: MrE
mailchimp already published a detailed case study

He can screw with his unsub links all he wants, staying out of "updates" requires not using a particular SMTP session practice that makes list management easier.

Also, if nothing else Google plays fair. Before the tabs, stuff from Google-owned entities bulked on a regular basis. The first thing that would occur to most of their competitors would be to whitelist all their properties with gmail, and they don't, to hold themselves to the same standard they hold everybody else. Stuff like Adsense reports, API authorizations and Play store promotions are being duly categorized to their respective tab. If they can deal with it, so can everybody else.

I can imagine other email providers doing the same soon...
