I use hostgator, have done for years and have multiple reseller acounts with them and other hosting companies (not on that list connected with hostgator). They will take your site down in 48 hours for DCMA's notices even if your business is based outside of the US and the DMCA doesn't actually apply e.g had an issue with a name being used, which was not in any form trademarked or otherwise in my country so I guess if you're server is US based you won't have a say.
Not had an issue with them, they have removed viruses from a wordpress site without any issue (didn't know about it they just got on with it). I can also say the same for other hosting companies I use though, no issues with those. I am wary of small hosts for reliability and basically being around in the future so I use names I know will be around. If you use a small host back your site up EVERY time you update it, it won't be a big issue then if something happens.

I use namecheap, site5 and many other hosting companies with reseller packages and I haven't issues with them either TBH.

In my experience, the support does seem to be better with hostgator, regardless of it's the same company. Somehow that division seems to have better support...

Problem is that they start cutting corners. I've been with Host Gator for over 5 years as reseller, never a problem.
Yesterday their multiple servers went down including mine.
Over 24 HRs and still not fixed. Going crazy with calls from my customers as they can't reach their emails and websites.
Following is the proof they still couldn't fix it (Link provided me by Live Support guys in response to my website's down problem)

Can't wait to find another reliable host like old day's HG.

I'm not trying to get an infraction here.. but this sounds more like a personal issue that you have with Hostgator OP. Otherwise, why would you be targeting them?

Firstly, correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe EIG actually kept the same data center and support staff for Hostgator when it was bought.

The big hatred for EIG actually comes from their migrations. I actually used to work for EIG, and all day nearly all my customers were calling in for legitimate help with somehing, and they would constantly be praising the hosting service. Then there's the few odd calls where so called "programmers" mess up all their code and think there's something wrong with the servers.. until I prove them otherwise. Or have their Wordpress site hacked, and think it is the Web Hosts fault, yet they haven't logged in to update it in over a year, nor took any other precautions to protect it.

But the real hatred for EIG from people is coming from the migrations. Like jeez, I was there for some where they had 600,000 accounts to move. Not to mention some of those accounts can have like 100 email accounts. It's not easy to do, but it's understandable for people to get angry at them. Scripts are used to mass update everything website and connection strings, etc. It doesn't always work out that well for everyone.

But anyways, I would get customers who call during a migration, and they would be so angry and cancel their services. Then they would call right back to another EIG property and get me and signup a new account. And I'd speak to them a few times over a 3 month period and they would be like "OMG you guys are such an awesome company! Way better than that last company. Their support sucks! Their servers suck! They just suck!".

The funny thing too is, a lot of those people would ignore migration emails which would give them great suggestions in regards to making sure the migration went smoothly. Like telling them they need to update their A record since we didn't control their DNS. Or to check their site on the new platform (temp url) to make sure everything is working for migration(and contact us if not).

But yeah, aside from the migrations, they're not that bad of a company. That's the only difference between them and other shared hosting companies. Is that they have a monopoly of web hosts and frustrating migrations. What are companies out there own that many though?

I've no understand. Hostgator is good or not? I know that they sell in overselling but prices are good (for small site and non business).

I am promoting hostgator since 6 months...through my affiliate links....but now I have doubt that why you are warning us that hostgator is not recommendable..

Were in the middle of a large scale transfer of a client from Hostgator over to our servers. The client has 4 "Basic Dedicated Servers" From Hostgator. These are windows boxes, so I am tweaking the firewall to allow us through for the transfer, and I notice that client has a 10gbps connection.

This is not usually ever seen on dedicated servers, and I would never expect to see it on a crappy Hostgator server. I pull up the the network info, and what do you know his network card is listed as " Red Hat VirtIO Ethernet Adapter". For those of you who do not know this is the network driver used in most KVM VPS Deployments. Hostgator sold this client 4x Dedicated Servers, however they were really VPS's. I highly recommend for all current Hostgator, Bluehost, and all other EIG owned companies clients to check their dedicated servers, and make sure you are getting what you paid for!

I used to be one of those people always recommending hostgator. Now though, I am not so sure. HostGator's Provo data center is down again and my site is not loading in many IP ranges. This is the second major shutdown that they have had in all of 30-45 days. Quite concerning. I might just have to move away from them for good this time.

So it's a real rule that you can't recommend ANY of EIG's brands? That's ridiculous. They're hardware, management and customer support is completely different for each brand. HostGator even has it's own datacenter its filling now in Houston.

Actually, I couldn't care less whether they are from the same damn company or not. Hostgator and iPage couldn't be more far from each other. Anyone who used both of them would know the difference.

Thank you for the heads up, I had no idea they were the same, I almost switched from one to the other, glad i saw this first.

I can confirm HostGator is absolute shit.

I can say I have worked with them enough to say that they're crappy in what they provide. Just because it says "unlimited" doesn't mean optimized for speed, or "fast" at all.

I now use a Centos VPS and do everything myself because I can depend on myself more than anyone else.

Similarly to ObliviOus, it seems to me that support is important. This is perhaps one of the plus I see with hostgator.

I may be off topic but I didnt want to open a new thread just for some quick answers ......Does anyone who has purchased the hostgator shared hosting has also purchased the three add-ons they suggest or are they worthless.........Please do give your honest advice....................Castiel
