So guys i finished making this website/large blog and now the .com domain is registered by a woman already and the thing is she's not even using it and it is expiring in 2014 so i decided to email her and she told me that she has a big company she is using the name for and if i want the domain it's $5,000 i think she is trying to rip me off the domain was registered on 2007-11-05 and is expiring on 2013-12-29 when you go to the website you get "This domain is missing from the Web Configuration" now i have to come us with a name the thing is i already made a logo and everything for it but i hope this is a lesson for everyone always check for the domain when you think of a name or else, what should i do now guys if you want to know the domain just PM me

Obviously redesign your logo, paying that huge amount for a domain name is nonsense.
 
Same happened to me with a domain for my band's website.
I saw the auction for it on godaddy for $5000. The auction ended early March.
I hoped it would go back into the name registry ad thought I could grab it up for a few bucks if it did.
In fact, the next day, the domain was back up for $10,000. Probably because I viewed the auction several times, and the seller might have thought they had a bite...
sorry, you can take that asking price and stick it... you know.
Instead, i used a coupon code and I snagged the domain name + 2 letters [state abbreviation] for .99 cents the first year, and 7.99 for the second year.... $10 bucks for a band's domain name is more like it!
 
Same thing happened to me too. I was planning to create a blog for a topic I was enthusiastic about. I figured out a name but then I discovered that the .com was taken. The domain name owner wanted 6k for it and was stubborn as hell. I just went for the .net.
 
I would have thought the domain is your first thing on the list....however.

If I had a shitty domain that I was about to let expire and someone approached me to buy it....I would instantly have big plans for it and want $5000

If somebody approached man said my client "shittydomainltd" would like to buy your "shittydomain.com" I would definitely need $10,000

They've already told you they are willing to sell, its now just a negotiation and depends on how much you have exposed yourself to them.

If as you suspect its just a dormant domain of no value then the buyer will be be happy with some money instead of none. Hit them with an opening offer of $100 give them a list of 4-5 similar names. Tell them your client is happy with any of the above its about who wants to do a deal first and see if they come back to you with a counter offer.
 
if she still want much , go for a .net

let it to expire and tell her that you are no longer interested in it.

after 2014 buy it .

duffers5000 is right , but not tell her any thing about your site or plan.
 
5000 $ is really too much. Pretend you are not interested anymore and wait until 2014
 
It is always better to think in advance before create everything and then trying to buy domain.
 
If your planning on doing anything on the web then the order of your actions should be:

idea > research > rough domain idea > check domain name variations > buy > develop.

Lesson Learned: Always start with your domain name and register it before you start on your web design.
 
Yup u should never start without a domain
but anyway .net or any others might work fine, unless you suggest another name
 
It's her property, she sets the price and she is not ripping you off.

She night be an idiot, but she is an idiot with the domain name you want.

Pay her price, or make other plans.
 
Why can't you use a permutation like my, get, buy, cheap, i, ... and pay $10/yr for .com domain?
 
Negotiate the price, Buy the .net or .co, wait to see if she renews it or not, or Think of a new name, or hit me up and I will help you think of a new name, Naming is my specialty...
 
I think you caught with a domain name marketer....

If they sell in few dollars then good otherwise you can register a new domain, you just need to be a little creative.. thats the thing..
