Okay - I was running out of space on my dropbox account, but being a geek I wondered if I could make my own dropbox like service for myself.
Took a bit of tweaking after the initial install of ownCloud to make it work with Windows 7 (allowing me to map a network drive to the VPS) but it works well now.
Luckily, I picked up a bargain VPS to use so it works out that I now have a 30Gb web drive for the price of a cheap VPS and a bit of hacking about.
If anyone wants to try it themselves, I have gathered the documentation together that I used, together with the hacks for Windows 7 webDAV and stuck it here:
Next thing to do is get SSL stuck on the server - if I crack that I will post it up.
