why don't you just just remove the links yourself in the footer.php file?

yes i agree with the above reply. you can just delete the file and you can edit too as per your requirement too.

You can LEGALLY strip off the footer in any theme downloaded from wordpress.org, because all themes listed there are distributed under the GPL. Non-GPL themes and plugins can dot be distributed via wordpress.org repository.

LOL at this message. You can't delete footer.php file, that is not the way. footer.php often contains important WordPress hooks.

Just delete links, you will not delete the whole file just for one line of code.

I use theme "Genesis". Add code into functions.php

//Remove footer
remove_action('genesis_footer', 'genesis_do_footer');

Yep it's not hard to remove, I know only very basic PHP but it's easy to see the relevant line to get rid of.

It takes a lot of time to create own themes than "modifying" a footer file

There are themes especially those themes that looks really nice which shows error once you removed the links as it has some code the check if the links are there or not. Well there are themes that you can just edit footer.php and remove the links.
